Well then the POPE should be the moral guiding light of civilization since with incomplete information and only his opinion from afar he can declare the war "immoral" and "unjust".

I'll criticize the church whenever I believe it to be necessary, whether I have your permission or not. Got it?

Sadaam should be tortured to get all possible information from him. Then hold a national lottery in Iraq and let the lucky winner double tap the son of a bitch.

I submit that you are too close to the point of contention and cannot be relied upon for a logical unbiased opinion on the matter. The US has meet the requirements of Just War. The NEW condition used by Rome to oppose the current war is one of Mutltilaterilsm, which is not included in any text I can find.

The most authoritative and up-to-date expression of just war doctrine is found in paragraph 2309 of the Catechism of the Catholic Church. It says:

The strict conditions for legitimate defense by military force require rigorous consideration. The gravity of such a decision makes it subject to rigorous conditions of moral legitimacy. At one and the same time:

the damage inflicted by the aggressor on the nation or community of nations must be lasting, grave, and certain;

all other means of putting an end to it must have been shown to be impractical or ineffective;

there must be serious prospects of success;

the use of arms must not produce evils and disorders graver than the evil to be eliminated. The power of modern means of destruction weighs very heavily in evaluating this condition.

These are the traditional elements enumerated in what is called the "just war" doctrine. The evaluation of these conditions for moral legitimacy belongs to the prudential judgment of those who have responsibility for the common good.

As the Second Vatican Council noted, "insofar as men are sinful, the threat of war hangs over them, and hang over them it will until the return of Christ" (Gaudium et Spes 78). The danger of war will never be completely removed prior to the Second Coming.

"let him who has no sword sell his mantle and buy one" (Luke 22:36)

"a time to kill" (Eccles. 3:3)

Thanks for a well constructed response. I learned from it.

And that doesn't mean I'm anti-Catholic, or a Catholic-basher, ok? I'm a protestant, so I don't recognize Papal Infallability ;0)

THIS oughta be good...

If I was Saddam's defense, what could I say? Something along the lines of "You heard what the prosecutor says. I agree."

You could put Cardinal Martino on as a character witness.

"Saddam is basically a good boy. He just doesn't make good choices sometimes--but who doesn't?"

Papal Infalability is often misunderstood. That is only true when he speaks on matters of doctrine. It is very rare. I spent 20 years as a fundamentalist protestant and totaly understand your position.
