Grim-Faced Katie Couric, Wearing Black, Downplays Success, Highlights Problems
The Today Show

Posted on 12/15/2003 4:42:43 AM PST by governsleastgovernsbest

Katie Couric didn't disappoint. As soon as the news of Saddam's capture broke yesterday, a number of FReepers began speculating as to how Couric would react to the "bad" news this morning.

I for one hypothesized that Katie would be wearing black, and sure enough, she was!

Couric interviewed Gen. Ricardo Sanchez. His troops captured Saddam, and Sanchez spoke with him personally on two occasions.

Throughout the interview, Katie maintained that grim, lock-jawed expression reserved for bad news and unpleasant interactions. Unless I'm mistaken, she never congratulated the general.

She quickly threw in Sanchez's face the response from Saddam when asked if he had WMD: "No of course not, the US dreamed them up to have a reason to go to war with us. We didn't allow inspections only because we didn't want them to go into presidential areas and intrude on our privacy."

Next, Katie wanted to paint a gloomy picture as to how Saddam's capture wouldn't improve the situation on the ground:

"Clearly, Saddam was in no position to orchestrate anything. Militarily, how much of the enemies' capabilities have really been degraded by this capture?"

"Isn't Saddam's capture basically just symbolic?"

Sanchez said that it was more than symbolic, and that although there would still be violence, this was a major step.

Couric wouldn't give up on her notion that Saddam's capture, if anything, makes things WORSE in Iraq.

"Soem are worried that this will actually incite more violence from members of the insurgency - Al Qaida, Islamic Jihadists. Couldn't it create a climate of more violence against US troops?"

Next, Katie sought to emphasize that the US has still failed to capture a more important fugitive.

Q: "Ibrahim Al-Duri is considered the real mastermind. How critical is his capture?"

Sanchez said that they would aggressively be seeking him and other HVTs (high value targets). The general concluded by very politely thanking Katie for her support!

Matt Lauer was much more balanced. He began by congratulating Gen. Odierno. and when Gen. Odierno concluded by saying "God Bless America," Lauer smiled pleasantly and said "nice way to end the interview."

Katie then interviewed Tim Russert. Russert observed that in his comments yesterday, Pres. Bush was quite measured. He wanted to avoid a repeat of the "Mission Accomplished" triumphalism.

Asked a worried Couric, "In political terms for Pres. Bush, is this a big boost, is it long-lasting?"

Russert: in the short term it is. If the economy is strong and Iraq is secure, he coasts to victory. Otherwise it could be tight.

Katie: "Everything seems to be so unpredictable [at least she hopes it is]. But when it comes to candidates particularly Dean, how does this affect him?

Russert: "Lieberman's statement about Dean, that if Dean were president Saddam would still be in power, was very aggressive. The issue will now really be engaged. Lieberman will carry the argument."

Finally, Katie wanted to portray the US as something of an international pariah, and to echo the official Dem line that the Saddam capture creates the opportunity for more internationlization:

Couric: "I think it's fair to say that the world view of the US not particularly favorable. Will the US use the capture of Saddam as an opportunity for more internationalization of the effort in Iraq?"

Russert: "This is a rare opportunity for a new beginning. Pres. Bush needs to be magnanimous."

Probably the historically dumbest reason to have your family destroyed, your capital bombed for days all your "private" palaces bombed to rubble and your country thrown into chaos. Of course, it must be true.
That's the sort of stand on principle one makes (and can make) as an individual, but not on behalf of millions.

Katie, had she not smirked at this outrageous assertion, has to be the second dumbest person on the planet; and the first, not counting sandmaggots.

Katie Coursick is absolutely revolting to me.

Barbara Streisand and Hillary Clinton love her, does that tell you anything?

Given that the interview was w/ a spokesman for Chalabi, I think that the interviewer's use of "resistance" was intentional & used to elicit the response he got (& wanted to get.) Watch & see if the same interviewer uses that same term in a report (as opposed to an interview where someone can rebut.) Terminology used in reports is much more revealing.

Don't look for Katie any time soon on The World Series of Poker.

Speaking slightly OT, don't forget to be in Ft. Lauderdale this April when the new Seminole Hotel & Casino opens. I will try to get a special Freeper poker table for any local Freepers or visiting Freepers who want to play a few rounds of Holdem and to meet other Freepers. This will be in conjunction with my friend Jessica's pre-graduation party from FAU which will also be held at the same locale that same opening day (sorry don't know the exact day it opens in April).

Someone should remind Couric that some of the nine dwarfs have pointed to the failure to capture Saddam as a sign of how badly the war was proceeding.

I couldn't believe it when Rather replayed (what he considered) highlights of his 2002 interview with Saddam in Baghdad.

He was portraying himself as an expert on Saddam and it was like he lost an old friend.

What a puke he is.

Yes Katie. When both sides fight, it tends to do that.

The obvious solution is merciless, total and impersonal destruction and defeat of one side or the other. Please make a note of this for yourself, and send GW a copy.

When she's having a morning like this one, the teeth stay hidden behind clinched lips!

Correction. When she's having a mourning like this one...

Things are changing and more and more people are noticing the liberal bias of the media in general.

Case in point:

I just got off the phone with a liberal co-worker who told me she received an email forward detailing all the good we have accomplished in Iraq: Schools, roads, hospitals rebuilt and open, vaccinations, health clincs, etc.

Her exact words: "I'm shocked, the news never says anything about this".

I NEVER watch that pathetic excuse for an American, but this thread made me curious.

I switched the channel just for a minute and saw this grief stricken woman in funeral attire.

The first thing out of her mouth was that the capture of Saddam did not end the violence in Iraq and a number of Iraqis were killed in a car bomb this morning.

I don't know how anyone can watch that show!

Last night, there was a lady in the checkout lane with her wig on backwards who was talking about how much she adored that "delightful Katie Couric."

Sounds like her head was on backwards.

Was it my imagination or did she just ask Wesley Clark, "...but wouldn't Iraq with Saddam in charge be preferable to one with him in custody?"

That's what I thought too. Does anybody have confirmation as to this statement? Or did the Perky One actually say, "...but wouldn't Iraq with Saddam in custody be preferable to one with him in charge?" Confirmation PLEASE!!!

I agree. You know there are women whose mother never showed them how to apply make-up. Others never learn appropriate dress or to dress with style. I have never seen Laura Bush look bad. She always shines like a new dime. Beautiful woman. They make a handsome couple.

As to Couric, you can see the effect of aging on her face. She has long ago passed that "cute & perky" stage girls go through. She's into HRT, sagging jowls, double chins, saddlebags under her eyes. And, speaking as a rogushly handsome mature male, I would never, ever give her a second look with those mosquito bite breasts and split end wig of a hairdo!

Remember. Her colon is actually on the OUTSIDE of her pathetic body. In other words, she is nothing more than the wrinkled folds of a poop chute!!!!

She is an obvious left-wing demoRat, hate America Deanite.

If anything good happens for the USA, you can bet that Katie will be down and depressed about it.

For being such a stupid sow, you just may be right on this one, katie... let's put the SOB back in his spider hole, tuck tail between our legs and run for the hills before the insurgency kills us all.
