I think we should go with speedy's suggestion and declare a "National Day of Gloating"...

Given Hitler's record--and much appeasement surrounding him (yet the hand-wringing over appeasement that followed his death)--I am quite aghast at the C-Span callers this morning who cannot equate Hussein with Hitler. One caller whines about the end of his Social Security because of the cost of the Iraq war. Goodness! He'd rather have his fistful of dollars than the alleviation of others' suffering--and our own country's threat of terror to boot.

I pray that the majority of the country share sane views, like those expressed by the majority of posters here.

"Saddam Hussein has brought unspeakable suffering over his own people and the whole region. I hope that with his capture the efforts of the international community to the reconstruction and stabilization of Iraq will be furthered."

"And that my country will get a big piece of the financial pie. Please?"

German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder, who opposed the U.S.-led war, wrote to George W. Bush saying: "With great happiness I have learnt of the capture of Saddam Hussein. I congratulate you on the successful mission. "Saddam Hussein has brought unspeakable suffering over his own people and the whole region. I hope that with his capture the efforts of the international community to the reconstruction and stabilization of Iraq will be furthered."

A statement from French President Jacques Chirac, who was also against the war, said: "The president is delighted with Saddam Hussein's arrest. "It is a major event that would strongly contribute to the democratization and stabilization of Iraq and allow Iraqis to find again the control of their destiny in a sovereign Iraq."

French Foregin Minister Dominique de Villepin added: "The page of the Iraqi dictatorship is thus turned."

Thanks, turds. Too bad you didn't have the stones to help us when the Iraqis, and the Coalition, needed you to do some heavy lifting. Hope those nice words caused your panties to twist into knots.

From what I've seen so far, the German press is very congratulatory to our GI's and to President Bush, and are unabashedly reporting of the jubilation of the people in Iraq.

Several sites have mentioned how the capture will help President Bush immensely in his re-election bid.

"Spiegel", for example, ran an article whose title was "Our children have a future again". It relates the fears of the Iraqis under the Saddam regime, and their relief at his capture.

CNN Germany writes of the resulting "hope now for the end of the terror against the democratization of Iraq."

Let me translate the REAL story for you:

German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder, who opposed the U.S.-led war, wrote to George W. Bush saying: "With great sadness I have learnt of the capture of Saddam Hussein. I curse you all for this successful mission as the ramifications it will bring on my panty-waste government are unthinkable. We will now have to do our best to kiss the butt of George W. Bush and Tony Blair in order to save some semblence of dignity within the world community."

"Saddam Hussein tried to bring peace and prosperity to his own people and the whole region through murder and torture and through this illegal war, George W. Bush and Tony Blair screwed it up by introducing the Iraqis and the Arab world to freedom and democracy. I hope that with his capture the liberals in America will continue to perpetuate the lie that the efforts of Bush and Blair are really to destabilize and rob Iraq of their oil, and that these lies will somehow grow to the point where the rest of the world ignores the evidence of illegal arms sales by my country soon to be unearthed in Iraq."

A statement from French President Jacques Chirac, who was also against the war, said: "The president is in mourning with Saddam Hussein's arrest."

"It is a major event that would strongly hamper our efforts to purge Iraq of evidence of our illegal arms sales & sadly will likely produce democratization and stabilization of Iraq, further screwing us of our rightful share of their money. It would also allow Iraqis to find out how much of the control of their oil money we actually had through sales of weapons that Saddam used on his own people."

French Foregin Minister Dominique de Villepin added: "WAAAAAAAHHHHH!!!!"

UK Prime Minister Tony Blair -- Bush's main ally -- said: "You bloody limp-wristed bastards can now officially kiss my limey red arse!"

Former Iraqi Minister of Information "Baghdad Bob", in a prison camp, now living as someone's biotch, said of Saddam's capture: "It is not true! Saddam is alive and well in Baghdad, along with 20 concubines and millions of loyal fighters ready to die for him. The imperialist swine have NOT invaded Iraq. We are in control of the entire country. Do not fear! We will repel these infidels with Allah's blessing!"

NATO Secretary General George Robertson said: "DAMN! Just when I was about to get to try out these aging toys we bought on the black market from the Russian mob, GW goes and screws me out of the chance to become Wesley Clark's cabana boy!"

Two things to note:

1) These were canned comments released in a statement (France and Germany), not public announcements.

2) It will be interesting to see what comes out of Saddam's interogation and ultimate trail with regards to any assistance and communications he had with those same leaders before and during the war.

Gerhardt compared President Bush to Hitler before pitched military festivities to topple Saddam began. Now he congratuates him on Saddam's capture. Waiting for Jaques "France sold Saddam no illegal missiles" to make his obsequious appearance. Can we say "forked tongues"?

They're not just "weasles"....they're "sneasles" : unholy crosses between snakes and weasles (letting the poor four legged and slithery members of the animal community off the political hook.)
