Some of you might recall, as I do, a sermon that was making the rounds for awhile--I think it comes back every few years. The latest version had a fellow caught in a horrible flood. The water continued to rise, but he rejected all efforts to evacuate him, saying, "I've put my trust in the Lord, so I'll be fine." Well, eventually he was sitting on the roof, still praying, and finally a helicopter came to rescue him, and again, he rejected the help. Eventually, the floodwaters washed him away.
When he appeared at Heaven's gates, he complained of his extreme disappointment. He said, "I prayed and prayed, and the Lord deserted me!" Then he heard a Heavenly Voice booming out: "I sent you three boats and a helicopter, what more did you want?"
That is what I meant by "pray and do"--sometimes God sends you the means to remedy a situation, but sometimes it requires we (at the very least) reach out and grab the lifeline.

We know so little about the brain and how it works, but we are now on a threshold of understanding that may really increase our knowledge. There was an article in Scientific America this issue about a CAT scan type instrument that could actually get a resolution down to the individual neurons themselves.
Men once believed (even good Christian men) that disease was caused by humors in the blood, or bad night air, or demons. But science progressed, and found out about the microbe, and antibiotics, and vaccinations, and soon most diseases that have been terrible scourges of mankind were brought down. Until recently, stomach ulcers were thought to be caused by eating the wrong foods or worrying too much, but about 15 years ago they found a certain microbe actually causes them, by eating away at the stomach lining, and was (against the prevailing view) able to survive in the terribly acidic environment of the upper digestive system.
There is now indications that many heart diseases and even cancers are caused by microbes or viruses. Is it impossible to believe that brain disorders, such as depression, obsessive-compulsive disorders, or even schizophrenia could possibly be acquired the same way? Even so, much has been recently discovered about brain chemistry, and it is proved that people who suffer from these various mental illnesses really do have a chemical imbalance in their brains. Does doubt and worry cause these imbalances, or do they result from them? That remains to be discovered.
I am not inclined to think that we can simply wish away bad feelings if it is a disease or chemical imbalance we may suffer from. Folks in this situation cannot simply "snap out of it" or "grow up" any more than could a cancer victim or ulcer sufferer. Faith in God and Jesus is the instrument of our slavation, but may not give us health in this life. The Lord is, after all, interested in our souls. This body will waste away. It is written, the Lord causes "the rain to fall on the good and the bad." We should pray for our souls, while using our God-given brains to discover cures for our illneses.

I don't know what happened. It does appear that he took his life, but by what means I don't know. I was commenting on the number of freepers who responded that they have gone as far as to have done that act. That surprised me.

My wife and mom are on Paxil (sp?). It totally changed my wife from an intovert to an extrovert. She doesnt' take sh*t from her boss or anyone else for that matter (me included) and does not get as anxious about tests, bills etc. Her quality of life is 1000% better. She wasn't a loon or anything before Paxil, but definately had some small to medium issues that I am convinced were physiologically-chemically oriented.
There is no reason to go through life not banging on all cylinders.

Thanks for posting this thread. I think you're right, depression is everywhere. I realize I take a little different slant than many, but here I go.
I suffer horribly from depression and I'm on meds. I am a believer in Jesus Christ and enjoy a wonderful, comforting relationship with Him and actively serve Him.
There are times when it just hits me out of the blue. BAM! And there it is, awful. All kinds of thoughts like suicide enter my brain. When this happens, you are not rational. You can't think clearly enough to work your way out.
I am a prayer warrior and intercessor, which means I pray for others and I pray against Satan and his demons. If we who believe in God, do not realize the power and determination of His enemy, we are deceived. Satan attacks the mind, especially if you are a believer because it is his objective to stop your witness.
This is why we can't pin the cause on any one thing in this world, i.e. too much bad news, worry, stress, etc. There is a common cause. There is an enormous battle raging.

Let me clarify my last resonse to you. I meant the act to go as far as put the gun to their body.

I included the need for family/friends to look out for those with emotional/mental
challenges...cause they may not even be able to recognize the lifeline.
The story you recited is a good illustration.
The Christian code isn't just about sitting around and meditating and/or worshipping...
it's also about getting off our "donkey" and getting with it.
If activity wasn't part of the Christian code, Paul, Luke, and the rest wouldn't
have been trudging around the Middle East and doing a "Survivor" episode replete
with a shipwreck and a bite from a poisonous snake.

No actually it has been confirmed that what makes MOST folks sleepy is there SUPERSIZED portions of potatoes , stuffing and turkey, not to mention the pumkin pie! That will sure make you sleepy.
I use "Natures prozac" on a regular basis. At low does it gives a feeling of well being NOT sleepiness UNLESS taken in large does.
Do an engine search on the web if you are seriously interested in find out about.
It costs me about 45 dollars for a bottle of 90 pills. I do not take it EVERY day but when I need a boost I do.

No, when I speak of obsessive behavior, it's not that. I get obsessive over a subject: Freeping or studying physics or handgunning or loving a woman or training a dog. I get 'addicted' to any of these things. I'm a very addictive personality. You could give me a paper clip and three bits of fluff and I would get addicted to it. That's what I meant as well. We know the "average" person doesn't know nearly as much about the news and politics as FReepers do, but....
Could "normal" people sit at a computer screen for hours at a time? Do "normal" people, even if they aren't sitting at the computer, need to keep checking back during the day to make sure they haven't missed any breaking news or been pinged to something?

On december 7 1999, I entered the hospital - preliminary tests showed pneumonia (they were wrong) ... that was the last time I was concious until New Years Eve ... not counting the in/out of a coma mental confusion.
During that short period I underwent about 13 operations and on Christams eve my primary surgeon even told my wife that she needed to call all my sisters quickly. One of the surgeons, had even refused to operate once telling my wife that I was lost and to start making preparations.
To shorten this tale - I was a Marine for 12 years and an outdoorsman all my life - used to physical activity and enjoying my God given strength. Up until that day in December.
My last operation was in April 2001, almost a year and a half later, mostly bedridden and hardly able to walk, the surgeons had me put back together - though my body looked like frankenstein after 100's of staples everywhere (They estimated I had somewhere around 500 staples all together on the outside - I have quite a few more on the inside holding me together).
Throughout this entire episode - I guarantee I had bouts of severe depression (even yesterday) because of my body's limitations now - even mental limitations result of a stroke I had during one operation. The worst part about the mental limitations - I know I have them.
BUT ... I have NEVER considered suicide - at times I wish I didn't survive what happened - but I am happy I did - getting to see both my sons married - one granddaughter and another on the way - I wish I could travel more, but I have to accept that.
The main cause of my depression these days is realizing that I am witnessing the probable FALL of the American Civilization due to the erosion of decency, manners, intelligence, morals, and all that is usually attributed to Goodness. Even here on FR, judging by the comments of people on many subjects, the acceptance of immorality is on the rise.
