I think KangarooJaqui says it all. You are unbelievably insensitive. She was kind enough to use the world 'callous." You ought to be ashamed. (to put it very mildly)
To: Yeti
But *obviously* severely depressed people are not thinking rationally, and don't make the ethical choice in their right mind. "
Completely false. Many are more rational than they would be otherwise.
Major depression has nothing to do with state of mind in most cases.

I thank God that I have a master plan for creating success in life. Because without that, life would be hell and I'd be very depressed.

Optimism is the first defense against depression. Have a belief in yourself, your future, and in your God.
After that, have a plan. Create one, a BIG one. Make sure it addresses your needs, whether they be for yourself or family, and that your financial needs are covered.
Finally, if you are ever thinking of suicide, get help immediately and acknowledge that you are experiencing a medical emergency. Thoughts of violence-toward-self and violence-toward-others might be related; who can know. So, if things are so serious that life itself is at stake, do yourself and friends a favor and get help.

Sorry. Have seen it too many times. Too often, giving in to depression is just that: a luxury. Think of our grandparents during the Great Depression and WWII. Think of the hardships they went through. My father's parents were literally sharecroppers in some backwater, nowhere hole in deep Mississippi during those days, for example. They
dealt with it because they didn't see that they had any choice. Now..........we feel a little blue, BAM!!.......pop a pill and all is wonderful.
For the third time, there ARE exceptions; those who truly have a physiological problem. I just don't for a second believe that they are the majority.

"Some people are really oversimplifying this issue, and it's painful to read."
And D^^^ is into his passive aggresive behavior, where he clearly enjoys hurting others to get pleasure. Even at the expense of a dead young man. Now THAT is 'ignoble' and not worthy of 'respect'.
You are correct: Your brother was selfLESS, not selfish.
Yes

"you should at least try 5-HTP, over-the-counter and one of the Trytophan chemicals. Works very similarly to the SSRIs in me."
Be careful. 5HTP can cause mania.

Thank you for your series of posts here. Your personal experience with your brother reminds us that the human experience is very complex and personal, and over generalizations can be at once wrong and hurtful. One size does not fit all, and casting judgment and aspersions on our keyboards from afar about that which we do not fully or even largely know or understand, is reckless. Thanks again.
And my deepest sympathy to those left to cope with the wreckage of this sad event, and hope that they will find the wisdom and courage to overcome and endure, and find meaning and joy in the ensuing chapters of their lives. That is easier said then done; I know it must to tough.

"Be careful. 5HTP can cause mania." That's one reason someone like the wife should monitor (with this or any similar drug).

Completely false. Many are more rational than they would be otherwise. Nonsense!
I've been severely depressed, and I didn't think as rationally as I normally do, although for me it was reason that eventually gave me the grip I needed to climb out of that pit.
Others have talked about their severe depression, and how it changed their thought processes for the worse.
You sound like alot of people I know. You read this or that article, maybe a case study, whatever. And you are painting with a broad brush, but the thing you are trying to paint has lots of tiny detail. *SLOP* there's your version of reality.
I can imagine some circumstances where the beginnings of depression or it's aftermath might be associated with some enhanced insight as a side effect of a sense of detachment or something, but the general case is quite the opposite.
In fact, the term "depressed" originates as a term describing the nervous activity of the patient! Their nervous system was deemed to be functioning at a diminished capacity. Google the symptoms of depression -- darn near a complete list of brain-center by brain-center functionality, all under-operating.

I think that you are confusing self-pity with depression. You can "give in" to and "wallow in" self-pity.

Oh, and there's also the little fact that you don't seem to care how your remarks are affecting his very deeply shellshocked family.I'm going to go out on a limb here, and try to be as tactful as I can - Tact has never really been a strong characterof mine, so I beg your forgiveness in advance, but I just want to say one thig in response to this...
No one is forcing you to read this thread, and I think it is very presumptuous to come into a public forum so soon after a loss such as the one you have suffered, and start slamming people because they voice an opinion about it that you don't like.
Your grief is understandable, and I can respect that, but when you bring stuff like this into a public forum, you are going to encounter things you probably don't want to read - that's part of discussion in a public forum, when you are dealing with people from a wide range of backgrounds, experiences, personal histories, and belief systems.
So, I guess what I'm trying to say is, that this topic is probably very painful for you, justifiably, but don't be blaming others for making the pain worse - no one here is to blame, and neither are you.

These statements show such a screwed up understanding of this illness as a WEAKNESS and as a result of failure, it is shocking.
Taking pills and 'getting help' and a better attitude does not help major depression for most. There are debilitating physical problems that sometimes DO NOT GET BETTER.
I can't take it anymore. If anyone wishes to discuss this in an intelligent and informed manner, please contact me.
The AMA, APA, govt, pol mental health groups, pharm co's are mostly full of Sh%^. As a society, we parrot their rhetoric and ignore the 1st hand accts of the ill. This has to stop.
