Hundreds of people angered by the repeal of a law allowing undocumented immigrants to apply for driver's licenses took to the streets of cities around the state Friday to kick off a daylong boycott.

The protest came in response to the Legislature's action last week and as part of an effort to highlight the economic contribution of California's Hispanic community, the nation's largest. The protest was planned to coincide with the feast of the Virgin of Guadalupe.

"Why weren't these people slightly detoured and marched straight onto the deportation bus? "

It took 17 posts until someone finally got the right idea.

Yeah, if you are illegal, and you openly state you are illegal, then you should be arrested on the spot.

What is it that these morons don't understand about going through the proper channels / processes to become legal immigrants as so many millions have done before them?

I'm serious. Are they just that stupid, or do they truly believe that they deserve special treatment? Squatters' rights? Just what is it?

Here's a news flash for 'em: I think I can speak for many when I say that I don't "owe" them a damned thing.

Pablo Lopez, 44, of Santa Ana, marched with about 70 others from an Orange County landscaping company that had released its employees for the boycott. Lopez said he was an undocumented immigrant for 12 years and drove without a license, but was always afraid of getting stopped by police and deported.

"People come to this country for opportunity. That's what we're fighting for," said Lopez. "We come here to work hard and we have family that we have to protect. If we don't have a license, we won't be able to do that."

Drove for 12 years as an undocumented "ill-frickin-legal alien?

Wants to protect his family?

OK. Lemme see. Born here. Always obeyed the law. And I am damn well going to protect my "LEGAL" family from idiots like this.

Do you think this crosses their minds?

Everyone needs to watch that movie at least once...

I lost count of the number of times I watched that movie. A couple dozen at least. When HBO first came out it played there for months, and it became a bit of a cult movie for me and a few of my HS buddies. Once we got our drivers licenses we'd drive around commenting on how many points various pedestrians we saw were worth. We were bad.

HUNDREDS!!! WOW!!

I'm with you. Hundreds march and it's earth-shattering news. I saw that 20,000 to 40,000 Iraqis marched in SUPPORT of the U.S. and that doesn't rate an inch of ink or fifteen seconds on the news.

Go figure.

"People come to this country for opportunity. That's what we're fighting for," said Lopez.

The majority of them do it legally.

"We come here to work hard..."

In violation of the law.

..."and we have family that we have to protect.

And we have American families to protect.

"If we don't have a license, we won't be able to do that."

Tough!

Another target of the boycott was Clear Channel, which owns 1,200 radio stations nationwide. Hispanics nationwide are angry at the company because of a Los Angeles-based talk show which they say frequently attacks immigrant rights.

Specifically, they are mad at John and Ken of KFI radio in Los Angeles for promoting the petition drive to repeal SB60.

Hmmm... I wonder... If we made the illegals all mad enough, do you suppose that they'd leave the State in protest?

Actually, we are stupid because the writing is on the wall.

Yes --- we don't even question why the Mexican government is exporting these types en masse ----- they're trying to prevent a Revolution --- and it will end up here. These people will take to the streets in a violent way --- ala Pancho Villa very soon.

"They talk about illegal immigration, and they want to get rid of all the illegal immigrants. ... What would happen at a state level if that were to happen?"

Why yes I do realize what would happen.

The job market would have to realign.

The $200,000 plus dollars my community is paying for the medical care needed to the accident victims that survived Wednesdays 12/10/03 accident could go towards paying off the debt, building old age homes, computer labs...

A suburban with TWENTY occupants all illegal immigrants being chased by Border Patrol crashed on Hwy 86s at Ave 66 in Mecca, CA killing 5 and sending the rest to local hospitals. 4 more are in ICU at Desert regional Medical Ctr in Pam Springs.

Guess how pays for all this care?

Bush has been as successful in securing our border with Mexico as Clinton has.

"What's the big deal! IIRC, California recognizes driver's licenses from Mexico."

How true we do in fact recognize Mecxican licenses and Vehicle plates as well.
