I'm sorry to have to report that one of our own Freepers, TrappedInLiberalHell, has passed away. His profile is HERE

I met Chris this past summer and found him to be a brilliant young man, who unfortunately carried around a lot of painful psychological troubles. He wrote few posts here, but was an active and clever noter, and a very sweet young man.

R.I.P., Chris van Loon

Thanks for the courage to share that with us. That's a stunning story.

"Scr*w those who have a problem with it."

I don't know. I remember a Freeper that did share her experience on a thread and was immediately blasted by several posters. It really hurt her leading her to forego posting for a time.

I always remember Abraham Lincoln. He had to take to his bed his bouts of depression were so severe. Poor man, he had a lot of trouble as he led the country in one of its hardest times.

So true about your dog - such a neat picture.

A dog bonds as a true friend. When you look in those sweet eyes you see goodness in the world. It is a blessing from God and a blessing that delivers faithfulness, unconditional love, kindness, loyalty, companionship, friendship and someone to take care of. Often the very medicine to get us through tough times.

Always take care of that good friend. (I've got three of them - I also often call them my tormenters as each runs in its own direction, having its own faults and own demands when I'm trying to do something. Yet, each is there to look at me with those sweet little eyes and all is forgiven.)

Michael, anyone with an FR sign-in like that is a friend of mine. Born the daughter of a NASA tracking station technician, here! (Carnarvon, Western Australia - out of action since the 1980's I understand)

I am so deeply touched by this I don't even have the words to express it. I started out in a NASA tracking station also. When I am working with the dish tomorrow, I will be thinking of you and Chris.

Clicking my "Post" button has never been so hard.

Why? You're among friends.

How about everyone pitch in a couple dollars each to the Freerepublic in his name? He loved this site and would want it to go on forever.

I'm so sorry for your loss. I enjoyed reading his posts -- I was impressed by his wit and his intelligence -- plus conservatism in someone so young is quite encouraging to me.

You and Chris will be in my prayers.

I am a suicide survivor (1986) ..
My husband that i dated for 7 years and was married to for 3 yrs suffered a severe depression that was too painful for him to survive...
I guess my best advice to you needs to be this...
Remind yourself constantly that if there was something you could have done to intervene....YOU WOULD HAVE..
Eventually you will believe it. I was so overtaken by subconscious guilt. Remember that every individual is responsible for their ultimate life decisions....and nothing can really stop them forever..
If you have children, be sure to seek professional help for both yourself and your kids. It really does help you heal.
God Bless you and yours, and i'll keep you in prayer..
Time really does heal..

Your attentiveness and kind service in posting this thread is admirable. May we all have a FreeRepublic friend or screen-acquaintance that remembers our passing, our troubles, or our losses as kind as you.

May his family and friends take heart in the fellowship he found and shared here.

O God of grace and glory,
we remember before you this day
our brother Chris
We thank you for giving him to us,
his family and friends,
to know and to love as a companion on our earthly pilgrimage.
In your boundless compassion,
console us who mourn.
Give us faith to see in death the gate of eternal life,
so that in quiet confidence we may continue our course on earth,
until, by your call,
we are reunited with those who have gone before;
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

I'm gathering from the way everyones dancing around the cause of death, that he killed himself.

I've been tempted at various points in my life.

I find it hard to work up anything other than anger for Chris right now. But I do pray for his family.

you've been "there" too , huh?. I wouldn't stoop as far as to say that those who have not experienced depression don't understand it. But to those of us who have been there, We know it like an old friend when somebody else describes it. I hope you are doing well.

I do. Fully. It's when you can come home from your kid's school play, having sat for an hour, beaming at them with pride, and after the house gets quiet, you sit there, the "walls of your bower closing in", and take out the gun, and just weigh it in your hands.

Been there.

Except about the kids.

I don't quite know what to say..other than..thanks for sharing, and I don't think it was in any way inapropriate.

I said it before, and I'll say it again.

Something GOOD is coming out here on FR as a result of this thread.

What a great tribute to Chris because of that.

Yes, but I'm still angry at Chris.

All I can say is, we didn't walk in his shoes, so let's not criticize, especially here.

I won't criticize, but I will express the anger I feel at him.

If he was alive, I'd slap him.
