I'm sorry to have to report that one of our own Freepers, TrappedInLiberalHell, has passed away. His profile is HERE

I met Chris this past summer and found him to be a brilliant young man, who unfortunately carried around a lot of painful psychological troubles. He wrote few posts here, but was an active and clever noter, and a very sweet young man.

R.I.P., Chris van Loon

Suicidal people can be very deceptive, very tricky, and are very good at masking feelings. The way I got when I was at my lowest is still scary. I was actually giddy with happiness that I was going to gone and leaving all my problems behind. So you get funny, you get happy, etc. It's all a show. If someone tells you they're depressed, want to committ sucide, they DON'T want to. They're hoping one human being takes time out from being a typical a$$hole and helps them.

That was a good one.

when I meet someone older than 50, I give it 70% odds they will go into a screeching anti-Bush, anti-Republican rant on the slightest provocation.

Well don't forget, at least some of those are conservatives who can remember what the GOP used to stand for.

Yeah I know . I was the archetypal class clown , did a lot of school theater, always joking. To use a comedy term , I was "always on". Took Me a long time to learn to "turn it off". and get real with Myself. I find I am happier and more relaxed now . I just hope Chris has found some peace.

I've heard that the biggest danger sign in a suicidal person is if they very suddenly cheer up. (It can mean they've mustered the resolve to actually do it.)

I'm astonished. He and I were roughly the same age. We had spoken a bit from time to time, I recall.

I can't believe that this thread went so long without me seeing it.

I sure wish that I could have been in a position to help. Don't quite know what more to say other than I can't believe it.

Huh, very interesting personal perspective. Thanks. I'm glad you made it passed it. But it's something I have a hard time fathoming.

My personal reaction at the time was that if they would just say *something* people would be streaming to help. I just can't see a problem big enough to cause it, I don't even know the man but there would be a lot of things I would be willing to do if asked, even by a stranger.

Rest in Peace Chris.

Please tell his family how very sorry I am about their loss. I had been on his website for gardening, and he was very knowledgeable.

RIP Chris.

YUP. I have hanging up on my wall, the rope that I tried to hang myself with as a reminder of my 'bottoming out'. Whenever I start feeling sorry for myself, I think of my mom first, then I think of the people that died on 9-11 then I think of dying people in Africa who would kill for a chance to be in America, etc. I get up off my a$$ and think of other people instead of thinking of myself.

It's all a very intense mind game.

Congratulations to you for being able to talk about this so openly.

Congratulations also for being able to find the way to deal with it now.

Sometimes people do not know how to react when you say somethings. I remember the reason why I start clamming up was because of people's reactions. I've posted some personal stuff on places like FR and some christian forums because strangers are more objective.

(((((HUGS))))) thanks so much. Yes I don't mind talking, now anyway. It helps to know that one person in the world besides God and your mother, loves you. I have a wonderful supportive friend and soulmate that encourages me. He tells me that he loves me even after I whine about liberals, cellulite, and stretch marks to him. Whining and cussing about libs is extremely therapeutic. Anytime I need a lift, I dig the useful idiot caption-a-rama. Plus all my friends and FRiends are indispensable.

Well, I'm 34, and I know quite well the path that Goldwater and Reagan set the GOP on the road toward standing for. Heck, the official platform still reflects that, so it's not like ancient history you need to be older to remember. You'd be surprised, some of us youngun's actually remember Reagan quite well ;)

Thank you for posting that link. It fills in many of the details.

I didn't read all the journal entries,
I just linked to the one titled "The big W -- WHY?"
(Apparently "why" go on a long hike -- which coincidently provided some insight.)
The full list of his journal entries can be viewed here.
