Just one observation: why is so much attention being focused on a CIA cartoon? Such videos frequently use exaggerated details to emphasize a point. The NTSB official report said TWA800 pitched up while rolling to the left in crippled flight. The flight ascended from about 13,800 to 15,000 to 16,000 feet (thats about 1,200 to 2,200 feet). At over two miles up and more than ten miles from shore such rise would be barely visible. The NTSB scenario would be consistent with witness statements about a horizontal, or slightly rising streak of light prior to explosion and breakup. It would not be consistent with statements about a vertical streak, or any observation of a launch.

Doesn't this alone seemingly blow the government's case out of the water? Not necessarily. The reports of something flying UP/TOWARD the plane are the ones hard to discredit (pieces of an airplane do not defy gravity and fall upward. Like I said, @ 10 miles, a 4000' difference is less than 7° But remember, the plane was at an altitude of 13,800' at the time, and the difference from sea level to that altitude @ 10M is just over 26°. An object covering that climb would certainly be noticable.

while you were vacationing at ocean side, how many meteorites did you see coming out of the ocean and climbing to 13,000 feet?

Remember Kalstrom(sp) the head FBI investigator of TWA 800 giving interviews to the media early on in the investigation. Initially he seemed to be of the opinion that a missile of some sort was involved in bringing the aircraft down. Then as time passed he seemed convinced, in fact adamant, that it was a fuel tank explosion that caused the crash. Kalstrom is now retired from the FBI.

Done a little flying myself so don't understand how this exploding empty fuel tank theory got traction.of course, there's still the "dog that didn't bark theory":
if a design flaw caused a malfuntion that resulted in an explosion of the central fuel tank, why wasn't the entire boeing 747 fleet recalled and repaired?
p.s. this would include AF1 as it is a 747, too.

"No way you could shut up a boat load of sailors if a Navy ship had anything to do with the tragedy."I still don't know if I subscribe to that theory yet or not. I would prefer to believe in the terrorism theory but I'm still having trouble imagining a shoulder launched missile hitting a plane at 13,000 feet (I am admittedly naive when it comes to shoulder launch missile ranges).
With that said, there was one sailor that attempted to say something very early on. He didn't want to be identified for fear of retribution but this sailor was the son of Pierre Salinger's "friend" as Mr. Salinger stated on the Larry King Show shortly after the tragedy. Pierre Salinger said that his friend's boy called the next day and said that "we" did it. He was apparently on one of the ships ( if not the ship responsible) in the secret exercise taking place below Flight 800. What happened? Larry was incredulous, everyone treated Mr. Salinger like some sort of whacko and poo-pooed the story and Pierre quickly faded into obscurity.

The big question here is WHY would our government lie to us?? Kalstrum must go to bed every night thinking that most Americans consider him a dumb a$$ jerk.

I agree about the difficulty of massive conspiracy. My comment only is directed to two things. First, the Clinton administation had a motive to not permit an unfettered investigation, that is to avoid a whole new issue, domestic terrorism during the '96 campaign. It's an issue they know they would not handle well and would give the Dole campaign a real hammer to beat them with. And secondly the resulting official explanation seems so preposterous that a cover-up seems to be the only explanation. But how a coverup is manipulated at that level and among honest hard-working people in the various investigating agnecies, I don't know.

I still don't know if I subscribe to that theory yet or not.
If one sailor would leak it, you can bet a hundred would. I question the "sailor" story that made it to Salinger for this reason. I know too many sailors - and Navy captains, for that matter - to buy into a theory that would demand that amount of conspiratorial silence. There are too many grumpy chiefs and smart-assed petty officers to keep something this big quiet for five minutes, much less years.
I'm reminded of an old saw about sailors. "Take a sailor and lock him in an empty room with three ball bearings. A half hour later, he will have broken one, lost one, and have the third in his pocket to take home."

Thanks for the post, John.
I am convinced that the TWA-800 explosion was caused by some external means -- an on-board bomb or a missle.
I have been an aviation buff since I was 4 years old, and have been flying since 1963. I am a retired Naval Aviator, hold an Airline Transport Pilot rating, and was a Navy trained Aviation Safety Officer, and in all my years of "messing around" with airplanes, I have never heard of any sort of "spontaneous combustion" occurring in a fuel cell, be it AVGAS or JETA! Simply does not happen!
I wish Captain Lahr well, and I hope that he is able to conclusively make his case. The American people deserve to know the truth about TWA-800.

Of course the CIA version is impossible. Just like the Warren Commission's account is impossible. The fedguv lies.

The big question here is WHY would our government lie to us?? Normal behavior for the fedguv is to lie. Better ask WHY would they tell us the truth?
