Done a little flying myself so don't understand how this exploding empty fuel tank theory got traction.

of course, there's still the "dog that didn't bark theory":

if a design flaw caused a malfuntion that resulted in an explosion of the central fuel tank, why wasn't the entire boeing 747 fleet recalled and repaired?

p.s. this would include AF1 as it is a 747, too.
