The White House yesterday said a new immigration review is under way that could lead to amnesty for millions of illegal aliens living and working in the United States.

Confirmation of the review came during a White House briefing, just two days after Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge said during a town hall meeting in Miami that the government had to "afford some kind of legal status" to the 8 million to 12 million illegal aliens in the country.

Excellent question.

IF it is a fact, a given, that there are 8-12 million illegal aliens within our borders, having crossed them illegally, the next question is:

What percentage of them came in during the 21 January 2001 to 12 December 2003 time period??

And WHY. And who takes responsibility?

Sometimes people who have the vote can be more dangerous than people who don't.

Excellent, thoughtful analysis. Without a single tinge of racism. I like your reasoning. Your post was very good. Good strategic ideas, too. You are giving some thought, and not just being a Bushbot Naysayer.

As I keep saying, "Lead, Follow, or Get Out of the Way" when it comes to this issue. You have shown you are a leader and a thinker. Thanks for your #121, freeper.

Your posts are always so intelligent. When I'm scrolling through a thread and see that little apple, I always stop to read what you have to say because I always learn something from what you have to say.

Illegals won't prop up the federal entitlement systems. Making them legal taxpayers, will.

Same with rapists and murderers. By keeping them on the street, they continue to pay things like sales taxes on gas and cigarettes. Good for federal revenue!

If Bush pushes this through I will definitely not vote for him in 2004 - this is it I am sick and tired of his compasionate conservatism - lets see if he thinks moderates and democrates will vote for him after this stunt.

cc'ing your excellent comments here, by URL link, right now, to both The Executive Office of the President, White House and the Republican National Headquarters in Washington, D.C.

We MUST proactively turn up the externally-directed HEAT, and not simply complain amongst ourselves. Thanks!

Everybody has principles, even the bad guys, but their principles don't match ours. Don't fall into the principles trap.

Now you see the real reason for all the talk of amnesty for the Criminal invaders?

No, frankly, I don't. The fact that someone is Latino doesn't mean they support illegal immigration. Prop. 187 got 40% or so of the Latino vote, even with all the scare-mongering that went on.

yes, just replace the Danube with the Rio Grande.

look, the elites in this country don't care -- they live in gated communities and/or have secret service protection. Anything that drives down wages - ANYTHING - is AOK.

So if they provide amnesty to the illegals here, are you going to defend that decision?

What I am going to do is wait to see what they are actually going to do and not react to something I think they may have said.

If they come out with a plan I don't like .. I will let them know my opinion .. just as I am sure many others will too

"Offer above ground status"

I am not sure what you mean by above ground status. Their current status of "illegal" fits perfectly. They broke our laws to get here, period. I'm not sure they can even prove their identities so who knows who all we are letting into the country via the southern border? They ignored the law once already coming here, what makes you think they would bother to obey it after getting here? I have nothing against hispanics who come here legally. But I do have a lot against *anyone* coming here illegally.

If we as a nation have the power to 'go around and round up and deport' (or imprison) middle Eastern terrorists in AQ cells and what not currently in the United States, we darned well have the federal and state administrative capabilities to do it for the illegal aliens, friend.

Not agreeing with Ridge on this whole thing...BUT that statement strikes me as wrong-headed. Our federal enforcement agencies are busy rounding up and deporting terrorists to protect this nation. To pull them off of that job to chase a two-bit illegal who only wants a job to support his family is a ridiculous idea. The local authorities should be turning these people over to the INS for deportation.
