My letter in response to student demonstrations at Cal State San Diego regarding the school Aztec mascot.
Dear Editor,
I agree with the protestors that the CSU San Diego mascot is not historically accurate. It doesn't protray the slaveholding, cannibalism, human sacrificing and susperstition that lead them to surrender their empire to a handful of Spanish soldiers.

The Aztecs were a terrible people. If the Spanish had not come--the other natives of Mexico would have put an end to their bloody rule. Many Natives Helped the Spanish take out the Aztecs. Only Socialist elements in the Mexican Revolution of 1910-20 highlighted the Aztecs to counter the European (Spanish) culture that was so powerful in Mexico.
A US Team should Not use this symbol! Better to use another emblem like Valero, the Mission Indian who lead a revolt against the Spanish Padres.

my friend from grammer and HS was QB there in the early 70s, Dennis Shaw. Saw a bunch of Saturday night games there and had breakfast with the team at the Wagon Wheel. Those were the days!

well, I thought that the truth might get some attention, even with a pinch of sarcasm. The PE is a wannabe lightweight version of the LA Times, but there's enough conservatives in the county to help keep them in check on occasion.

mascot is not historically accurate. It doesn't portray the slaveholding, cannibalism, human sacrificing so maybe they could do some of this stuff during the halftime show

PS: theres a bunch of people in Mexico and the US going around claiming to do Aztec dances and picking up some cash. When I asked some of them how they authenticated the dances, they get defensive. Some admit, just from another dancer. The costumes ae nce though! LOL!

Oh dear.
Someone who wants to emulate the LA Times.
That's pretty bad.
Yeah, a somewhat sarcastic but truthful reminder works.
Will they see it and understand it though?
In experience with my local communist fishwrap, tehy usually don't understand it.
