Wasn't there an era, back awhile, when CSUSD (or San Diego State) was considered one of the best teams in the country, despite being in a lower ranked league system?

Your comments bring back such memory bytes. (I went to football-less CSUF and envied San Diego for such an accomplishment).

They were in a league with many other Cal States up until the late 60s. They went independent. My friend was QB I think in 70, 71. In 70 they had left their league and were independent. They had 9 home games out of 10 games. Everyone wanted to come to San Diego.

Even though they had some great seasons they were just one of the best of the second tier. I think after he left Navy was on the schedule for a couple of years. Now they play higher ranked teams but come in about 50-50.

My friend was rookie of the year for the Bills in 72 I think. Over Terry Bradshaw. When OF came along they ran the ball more and Shaw sat on the bench for various teams thereafter.

Yep! I saw Tom Petty, The Cult, Oingo Boingo, Jerry Garcia Band, and many more at OAT. One of my fraternity bro's was Assoc. Student Body President and so we always got free tickets for the show's there. I also saw Guns n Roses at the small club near Monty's but the name is escaping me. Glad to see that somebody else graduated from that place because going to school was secondary to going out on a dawn surfing patrol at Black's Beach!
