Daily Campaign Finance Reform thread

Posted on 12/11/2003 8:58:58 AM PST by Valin

Would you be willing to start a daily thread with this intent? Or conversely, a thread that is bumped to the top regularly? I would help. I have too many responsibilities to commit to hosting it. Lazamataz

To get this started my suggetion, Start putting pressure on your local rep. and senator to undo this monstrosity. Everytime you see them, ask them, What are you going to do about this? another idea, let them know that you are cutting back by 1/2 your contribution to them as a protest.

Pressure Pressure Pressure!

"Would you like me to come back and post their responses? They won't take long to read; Leahy is the only one who ever responds."

Oh Yeah! I'd love it... it would not only serve as a "bump," it would help people to understand what is going on with all the respective senators/congressmen/congresswomen.

FR has members in all fifty states. Wouldn't it be great if we could get at least a few people in each state to make some effort towards this? And report back to this thread?

To quote, who was it, Al Michaels in the Olympic Hockey game against the Soviets, "DO YOU BELIEVE IN MIRACLES?"

Yes, I do. :)

Great idea here. Arlen Specter is my rep. I have been putting off calling his office, because the "girl" who answers the phone is so nasty.

Of course I am always calling to complain that I can't stand the jerk... but I will try to stomach the thought again tomorrow. I have sent e-mail to Specter's office.. I will vote Toomey and press everyone else to do the same.

IMO, this is exactly what needs to be done. Keep the pressure up until we see changes.. it may take along time.

I am in.

The poster said the following: Somewhere there is inaccuracy. Wellstone(d-mn) shouldn't be voting.

I asked why.......

No where did the poster say that he shouldn't be voting on any repeal of CFR... that's your words not the posters....

The original list of votes was on the original vote back on Mar 20, 2002 for the Senate and sometime in Feb. for the House... Wellstone was killed on Oct. 25, 2002. So my question to the poster was why shouldn't Wellstone have been voting.....

Any response from Leahy will have to be accompanied by a "barf alert." The Titanic is more likely to float to the surface tomorrow than Leahy is to vote for repeal of CFR.

"The Titanic is more likely to float to the surface tomorrow than Leahy is to vote for repeal of CFR."

LOL!

As Scalia noted, and Freepers have sadly joked, this bill protects incumbents. I guess there is no more wedged-in, protected incumbent than Leahy.

This whole situation makes people, even optimistic people like me, pretty cynical. I mean, I've been a very strong GW supporter but if he doesn't come out strongly in favor of repealing this direct attack on the First Amendment.... I don't know. It's sickening.

But I'm not going to worry about that now... my main goal now is to get someone, somewhere to sponsor a bill to repeal this garbage, and to do it--symbolically--in the very first day that Congress is in session.

Can someone post the people who voted AGAINST CFR? Perhaps one or more of them would be interested in this.... Can a bill be sponsored by a whole team of reps? If so, wouldn't that be amazing? :)

Then...we need to work hard to get a vote on this next spring.

And I hope that there would be at least some democrats who would realize what is at stake and demand of their reps to vote in favor of the repeal.

Hi, I didn't mean to be rude, I just didnt' know what you meant. It is confusing. :)

And that is a good reminder that it was a Daschle-controlled Senate at the time.

And if he cites Scottish law or something, tell him... oh I don't know... I can't think of anything funny that's not a bit nasty too. ;)

Good luck, and thank you! :)

YOU ARE VERY RAPIDLY BECOMING MY FAVORITE FREEPER!!

So you got 140 papers to grade....here is the scam!

Tell all of your students that you are giving all of them an A. Then tell them that you are only doing this because you want the slackers to improve, and you are offering them an added inducement to improve their performance. Tell them that the A students know who they are...and the B and C students know who they are...and you are giving them all one last chance to prove their worth. I don't know if it will work, but you are too valueable as a FReeper to waste your time as a teacher...:)
BEST REGARDS, ia

OMG, you are too nice, way too nice. :)

To quote Mike Myers, "I'm NOT Worthy!"

anyway, back to grading, I only got three, count 'em, three done today. :)

The sad thing is, I have given these kids (freshman comp ) so many chances to revise, etc... but I'm supposed to make sure that they're all in the B range (what used to be a C, btw!)

Oh, it's okay. :) Hubby can cover for me and I'll just get it all done at the last minute, like always.

Anyway, to me, this (cfr repeal) was pretty important...

GReat idea, anyway...and you're right, A students know who they are, etc...

I don't know. I wish I didn't have to give grades and I wish I could just help them improve their writing. having 70 students per class is silly.

anway, thanks again for your post...

See ya soon! :)

"Baby, you the best!.....Tell your husband I said so:)"

LOL! and thanks!

I've got to quote some Canadian songs here... you know, they have a law that says that they have to play 40% Canadian.

Today, I swear, there was a song devoted to:

"Where's My Remote"

And the other major song is:

"Take it Easy at a Red Light..
There's time to think at a Red Light"

I know this is off topic but these songs are serious Canadian songs... LOL!

goodnight everyone... and thanks for all the kind words.. :)

Isn't it awful! I don't like suspecting kids of plagiarism ... but you never know when they put the work in or not. Sometimes it's hard to tell.

The problem is, with two classes of 70 kids, I don't know them well enough to really know when something is amiss.

In writing/reading, small class sizes are important. That's the only way to teach.

I used to teach in Denver, but I only had 20 kids per class.

Anyway, I'd better log off and put my (biological) children to bed. Take care, everyone! :)

and thanks, IM, for your posts and bumps here. They mean a lot... and I hope they will make a difference.

I hope Freepers care as much about repealing cfr as they do about infighting.
