U-S troops kill senior Saddam Fedayeen officer, his neighbors say

Mosul, Iraq-AP -- Neighbors of a senior officer in an Iraqi paramilitary group say U-S soldiers shot and killed the man at his home in Mosul (MOH'-sul) today.

The U-S Army confirms there were raids in the area, but it's refused to comment on the reported death.

Two of the man's neighbors says U-S troops stormed his house, and shooting was later heard. They also say he was a member of Saddam Fedayeen, a group believed to be taking part in attacks against U-S occupation forces in Iraq.

The house was locked this afternoon. There were several bullet holes in the gate. A black banner nearby said the man was "martyred during a blatant aggression by American forces," and gave today's date.

MOSUL, Iraq (AP) -- U.S. troops shot and killed a senior officer of the paramilitary group Saddam Fedayeen after storming his house in this northern city on Wednesday, his neighbors said.

The U.S. Army confirmed there were raids early Wednesday in Mosul but refused to comment on the reported death of Col. Ghanem Abdul-Ghani Sultan al-Zeidi.

Two of al-Zeidi's neighbors, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said U.S. troops stormed his one-story house in Mosul's central neighborhood of al-Sukar about 4 a.m. and shooting was heard later. Helicopters took part in the operation, the neighbors said.

The gate of al-Zeidi's house was locked Wednesday afternoon. There were several bullet holes in the gate. A black banner nearby read: "The heroic martyr Colonel Ghanem Abdul-Ghani Sultan al-Zeidi was martyred during a blatant aggression by American forces at his house on 12/10/2003."

Capt. Brian Cope, a spokesman for the 2nd Brigade of the 101st Airborne Division, refused to comment on al-Zeidi's death.

Cope confirmed that the army carried out raids Wednesday against "35 separate targets" in Mosul. Cope, whose brigade controls Mosul, said dozens of people were captured in the raids including suspected members of Saddam Fedayeen and other former regime loyalists.

That's because these badboys didn't figure on the US military fielding a force
that like the Israelis, will take some casualties...but never stops coming on.

I suspect a few of the bad-boys are getting a bit more concerned...just as
Uday did in his last days.

From what I have read 'Operation Pheonix" was the one program that was actually yielding positive results. In fact, it was the one thing that might have actually won the war if it was pressed far enough. VC hated it as much as they hated meeting our special foprces which they called 'the men with the green faces'

Operation Phoenix eliminated about 25,000 of the enemy, if I'm not mistaken, mostly higher ranking ones, as they were the primary targets of the operation. Officers, political leaders, etc.

I should add that it was probably the biggest single factor in the destruction of the VC. If only we had also destroyed the NVA.....
