WASHINGTON - President Bush quietly signed legislation Tuesday that would extend for 10 years a ban on plastic guns that can be slipped past airport metal detectors or through X-ray machines.

The legislation bans the manufacture, sale or possession of such firearms, but exempts military and intelligence agencies.

How about a Kevlar wrapped composite? The darned thing doesn't have to last very long, 20-100 rounds max, close range only.

Yeah, sure wish I could have afforded some of that neat stuff for myself! Of course putting it on my old BMW would be like dressing granny at Victorias Secret!

Making her lighter would make granny go. :) Just how strong are those composites anyway? I imagine that for racing purposes they should at least be able to withstand what a magnesium wheel would. Are they more brittle than metal, meaning when deformed they crack instead of warp?

I'm not a gunsmith, but I'd imagine it would be possible to fabrcate a barrel out of ceramic, reinforced with carbon-fiber-epoxy if need be.

Googling around I fnd there are ceramic/steel barrels. I see not reason the outside of the barrel would have to be steel. I also found a spear gun (for spear fishing) with a ceramic/carbon-fiber barrel, but I have no idea how spearguns are propelled, so I don't know if there are order-of-magnitude differences between spearguns and normal firearms.

" I used to love those sparkly guns. They gave off a kool aroma too."

Wore my finger out many times trying to light a fire with those sparks.

Hehe, that's true. No matter how much you zipped 'em up you could never get them to light anything.

Had to get the magnifying glass for that.

I'm no expert here. A good source would be the EAA (Experimental Aircraft Assn) From my experience, the stuff bends to a point and then fails catastrophically. It has something to do with the fact that it is woven, and like a garment, when one threat fails it looses integrity.

Sig Pro?

Also a company not far from me owns the rights to a design they made years ago for the military. Red Eye Arms, Inc.

Just because the public and even some LE agencies and military don't know about it, doesn't mean it doesn't exist. If theres a ban, theres a reason for it.

Anyone still think Bush wouldn't sign the AWB renewal as well?

He signed the repeal of the first amendment, why not?

Me neither. That's right the carbon fiber is a woven material bonded with some sort of epoxy. I think it is strong against compression and tension, but not bending. It's the kind of thing that might not be suitable for a gun barrel. Instead of a weave, some sort of molded plastic composite might be better at handling barrel pressure. Don't know what kind of plastic and what else would be in it to make it strong enough.

Actually it would be possible to make the gun all plastic except for a barrel liner...inside plastic or carbon fiber...

For a one shot throw away...using caseless ammo...nearly anything is possible...

Glocks also have big thick steel slides, steel internals as well as metal flakes embedded in the polymer frame
a concession Gaston made to the liberal rubes many years ago..

I've got a Sig Pro which has about as much steel as a Glock, just a polymer frame.

I would think the bullet components would be a bigger challenge than the gun itself. To make a small handgun with ammo containing no metallic components would be a real challenge. But even if you could do that I would think it could still be detected.
