I would agree with you, FC.
Immigrants who come here to the USA also need to become fluent in English.
They need to be weaned off of their own languages as best as possible and as quickly. But the marketing directors as Walmart, Target, Citibank, and those who pack instruction sheets for household appliances, and many other places, increasingly will never see it that way. Sign.

Another honest Democrat dies before his time. Apparently in that party, conscience is a deadly burden.

What are you trying to do, OFFEND somebody?!?!?! There are CROSSES on those gravestones. Be ready to fend off the ACLU on this one, pal....

Paul Simon proved that you could be a "goo-goo" (as we call good government advocates) and still win in Illinois. He never needed help from Mayor Daley in Chicago, Paul Powell in Little Egypt, or any of the other good ol' boy machine Democrats. Corruption and cronyism were even worse in the '60s than they are now, but he still thrived. His integrity was more powerful than their political muscle.
To: RonF
We know the hurt his family is having right now and I pray to God that he give them comfort.

Would America benefit by being more fluent in various languages? In the short term, yes. But we're called the "melting pot" for a reason -- those who come to this country should learn English and be absorbed into our culture. We certainly don't need to be Balkanized.
I wouldn't go to another country and expect that they learn my language in order to converse. If I want to converse, guess what I have to do? Learn their language!
To: Maigrey
I disagreed with him politically and sometimes his partisanship made me seethe. But I believe he was an honorable and good man. RIP and fly the flag at half-mast.He deserves the honor.

God rest his soul, and prayers for his family. Wasn't he a politician of some kind, years back? Makes me feel old.

Is the reason that instruction sheets are in several languages because they want people who live in the USA to be able to read it no matter what language they speak, or because they market the goods in several countries?
As one example, all goods marketed in Canada must have French instructions as well as English.

Paul Simon served as Senator from Illinois in the '60's and '70's. He was also a noted Lincoln scholar.

----DEAN AT WELLSTONE GRAVE: Shh! Listen! See! Hear it! Hear it! I can hear Wellstone! He is saying "Dean will win! Dean will win!".----
Dean actually DID hear that, but it turned out to be Wellstone's oldest son hiding behind the gravestone.

He was a democrat, which means that he will still be able to vote several times in the 2004 election.

My grandfather was a supporter of Senator Simon. My significant other thought he was the best man for the job in 1988...we've all grown up a bit since our indiscretions of youth, but I pray his family will have strength in this very tough time.
