Murdered at 10:55pm eastern on 12/8/80. At 11:15pm Howard Cosell interrupted the Monday Night Football game between Miami and New England, as it was going into overtime, to announce:

"One of the great figures of the entire world, one of the great artists, was shot to death horribly at the Dakota Apartments, 72nd Street and Central Park West in New York City. John Lennon is dead. He was the most important member of the Beatles, and the Beatles, lead by John Lennon, created music that touched the whole of civilization. Not just people in Liverpool, where the group was born, but the people of the world."

Not that I agreed with his politics, but anyone watching that night will remember that weird moment.

Aw c'mon, the Beatles' music more often than not was great. 'Twist and Shout', 'When I saw her standing there'(can't remember the song title, but most remember that song), 'Paperback Writer', 'I Wanna Hold Your Hand', 'A Day in the Life', etc., the early tunes were great, as were some of the latter stuff. Lots of variety.

Big city life, life in the fast lane, fame, drugs, etc has laid many thousands to waste, including the famous and non-famous.

Looking at the big picture, it's all such a waste..

If Lennon could do it over, it would be my bet that he would settle for being an unknown 60 year old sheet metal worker, going home to his family tonight in Manchester...

I don't care that much for their music either, but I can understand why some love it.

Here is my problem with John .

How can I listen to "all we need is love" from a jerk who leaves his baby boy , crushes his world and never looks back. I am not impressed with feigned passion. Words.. that is all they were.

To me that is indisputable. John may have been the "real" rocker during the touring days, but once they got in the studio, it was Paul whose talents far outshone the other 3. George Martin has even said as much.

Tax Man, Revolution, When I'm Sixty-four, these are all good "republican" beatles songs.

Maybe some other Beatles loving freepers can list more.

I'm pretty sure Harrison gets the credit for Tax Man, not sure about the others. Not a big Lennon fan, but I had ultimate sympathy for him as yet another victim of murder, on his doorstep! That was back when NYC was starting to get really bad.

And I never hated Yoko Ono.

A lot of people have a problem with John. But the Beatles were greater than the sum of their parts.
