Good. I don't care how good a Republican he might have been. He consistently thought that traffic laws didn't apply to him, and he killed a man.

No special treatment for politicians of any stripe.

I guess the jury didn't buy the *I had nothing to eat all day* defense.

Not a big surprise, is it? What is good about this episode is that the system WORKED. And there aren't a cabal of conservatives defending the guy. Imagine if this were a liberal--we'd be hearing stories about how he was being attacked by mean Republicans, etc.

Finally a jury that knows when someone is guilty of committing a crime.

From the Sioux Falls Argus Leader:

Janklow Guilty on all counts

Updated: 5:48 p.m.

published: 12/8/2003

FLANDREAU - A Moody County jury has convicted Rep. Bill Janklow of second-degree manslaughter in connection with the August traffic accident that killed a Minnesota motorcyclist.

The jury also found the congressman guilty of three misdemeanors, including reckless driving, speeding and running a stop sign.

The jurors, eight women and four men, deliberated about five hours before returning the guilty verdicts.

Janklow was charged after colliding with Randy Scott, of Hardwick, Minn., at a rural intersection in Moody County on Aug. 16.

Scott died at the scene.

Investigators said the congressman was driving 71 miles per hour in a 55 mph zone when he ran a stop sign and collided with Scott.

Janklow's lawyers said during trial that his reflexes were dulled by low blood sugar as a result of diabetes, which he didn't realize because the symptoms were masked by a hypertension drug.

FLANDREAU, S.D. - In a verdict that could bring an abrupt end to a three-decade political career, a jury convicted Rep. Bill Janklow of manslaughter Monday for a collision that killed a motorcyclist, rejecting the congressman's claim that he was disoriented by a diabetic reaction.

S. Dakotans: Am I right in assuming that Stephanie Herseth will be your next congressperson?

I'm no authority on SoDak politics but I live close enough...so I'll throw my two cents in.

SoDak may be a GOP state but it is very capable of electing Democrats to office (Daschle and Johnson anyone?). In 2002, Stephanie Herseth pushed Janklow strongly and made him work harder than he had in quite a while.

Herseth will start out with an advantage and a potentially divisive GOP primary (it may happen, you can't rule it out) will divide the party, allowing her to win.

John Thune CAN beat Stephanie Herseth. I'm not so sure if any of the other potential candidates can.
