Finally a jury that knows when someone is guilty of committing a crime.

From the Sioux Falls Argus Leader:

Janklow Guilty on all counts

Updated: 5:48 p.m.

published: 12/8/2003

FLANDREAU - A Moody County jury has convicted Rep. Bill Janklow of second-degree manslaughter in connection with the August traffic accident that killed a Minnesota motorcyclist.

The jury also found the congressman guilty of three misdemeanors, including reckless driving, speeding and running a stop sign.

The jurors, eight women and four men, deliberated about five hours before returning the guilty verdicts.

Janklow was charged after colliding with Randy Scott, of Hardwick, Minn., at a rural intersection in Moody County on Aug. 16.

Scott died at the scene.

Investigators said the congressman was driving 71 miles per hour in a 55 mph zone when he ran a stop sign and collided with Scott.

Janklow's lawyers said during trial that his reflexes were dulled by low blood sugar as a result of diabetes, which he didn't realize because the symptoms were masked by a hypertension drug.

I don't know. I suppose the judge will decide sometime this week. I wonder if he will go to a minimum security prison/

Not a big surprise, is it? What is good about this episode is that the system WORKED. And there aren't a cabal of conservatives defending the guy. Imagine if this were a liberal

You mean like the Chappaquidic Kid?

The law in Massachusetts was that any driver in an accident in which someone was killed was automatically charged with manslaughter. Unless you were a Kennedy.

I agree. Even though I shouldn't do it, I keep imagining all the excuses every Democrat would have come up with, if this had been Ted Kennedy or some other lefty.

FLANDREAU, S.D. - In a verdict that could bring an abrupt end to a three-decade political career, a jury convicted Rep. Bill Janklow of manslaughter Monday for a collision that killed a motorcyclist, rejecting the congressman's claim that he was disoriented by a diabetic reaction.

Does he have to step down from his office, now? Or what happens next after he is sentenced? Or can he stay on like Ted Kennedy?

Adios, Bill.

S. Dakotans: Am I right in assuming that Stephanie Herseth will be your next congressperson?

Nope, Thune isn't interested in going back to the House.

He seems to be leaning towards a run against Daschle - and the GOP needs the Senate seat much more than the House seat.

Janklow, the state's only congressman, is accused of speeding, running a stop sign, reckless driving and second-degree manslaughter (search) If convicted of manslaughter, a felony, Janklow could face up to 10 years in prison, as well as a House ethics committee investigation.

Under the committee's rules, representatives convicted of a crime that carries two or more years in prison should refrain from voting in the chamber until they are cleared or are re-elected.

The ethics committee could issue a critical report, with no other action required. It could also recommend a House resolution reprimanding him, censuring him or even expelling him. Click

Imagine if this were a liberal

If this guy was a liberal he wouldn't have been charged in the first place.

Didn't realize the Prosecution and gainfully employed jurists were psychic, able to know his state of mind and physical condition at the time of the accident(MANSLAUGHTER).
