I agree, this doesn't pass the political smell test.
Something is going on between the Clinton camp and Dean that we don't know about

Oh, wouldn't a Cheney v. Clark debate be wonderful?
To: kabar
Exactly. This is a struggle for control of the Dem Party. The early endorsement is meant to steamroll the Clintons.Time will tell, but the only way to wrestle control over the party from the Clintons is to win in 2004. Al Gore is a political idiot, I doubt he can out smart the Clintons. Hillary spent yesterday positioning herself right of Dean. When Dean loses in 2004 who emerges as the front runner in 2008?

Hillary's reaction:
To: kabar
Gore is laying down his marker against the Clintons and their boy Clark. And the endorsement is to be done in Harlem. Isn't that Bill's territory?

Gore enforsement the kiss of death !

Craig Crawford just said on MSNBC that Algore is sitting on eight million in campaign cash and the question is, will he be turning it over to Dean. I would think he will. What else would he do with it? Distribute it to several DemonRat candidates to advance his takeover of the DNC leadership?
Sit on it and use it for his 2008 campaign?

I am still surprised at it. I would have thought it would have come after New Years, when people are not focused on the holidays.
If Hillary endorses Dean the week after New Years, then we'll know that what we thought was an internal power struggle was really choreographed for maximum impact. First Gore, then her.
As a matter of fact, it would not completely shock me if Hillary gets tapped for his VP and he announces, much like Bush did, that Clark would be his SecState or SecDef if elected.

And is Dean that hard up for political cash that he has to deal with the Clinton Mafia over 8 million dollars in Gore's campaign warchest?
Although as the Godfather once said 'Keep your friends close and your (DNC) enemies closer..'

Oh, I figured there were other uses, but I'm willing to bet that Dean gets it. I do not see Gore running in '08 and he just kissed off the other rat candidates.
