He promised this bill during the campaign. If you were paying attention, you should have known he was going to do this. It's not my fault or the President's if you weren't aware he supported this.

A direct tax on income is born (16th Amendment), state governments give up their representation in Congress (17th Amendment), World War I, Prohibition (18th Amendment); what a decade that must have been. Talk about a self-destructive generation.

Which make you wonder why he promised to deliver legislation which has to originate in Congress. And I am not trying to totally blame President Bush for an election ploy that evey Presidential candidate uses, but the fact is that Presidential candidates shouldn't be making promises about delivering legislation, it really isn't their job to do so.

I was aware of this, but this doesn't change my annoyance at how President Bush bullied certain Congressmen to support the bill, even if the bill wasn't in the best interest of their constituents. That strikes me as being pretty low, and something that the Executive should know not to do.

Also, this doesn't change the fact that this bill is just bad policy, period.

"The purists and the RATS hate the bill...so what else is new? I am proud of President Bush for keeping the promise he made when he was campaigning for the presidency. Promise made, promise kept. Everyone knew in 2000 that he would fight for this and he did."

So is the Heritage Foundation purist or RAT? I am not sure I understand where you are coming from here. Heritage owns Townhall.com, of which Freerepublic is a member of, so is FR in your group of purist/RAT also?

No, Al Gore was promising uniform coverage for all. Bush wanted it to be means tested for poor seniors only. I guess he changed his mind to get reelected. BTW, Bush also promised that CFR would be signed over his dead body.

Well, I see that you are back to your charming self. You know, some women don't mind being insulted. It just makes one more determined to see the truth out.

Very true. The vote in the House went on for three hours at which point the White House was strong arming Congressmen to vote for this bill, and told them there would be consequences otherwise. I wonder whether Toni Soprano has a new job.

Yeah, it's a well-known rumor in Washington right now. I guess it gives new meaning to the "Bully-Pulpit", right?

Right on. Now we know what the purpose of the bully-pulpit is in the Bush administration.

And also for your information, if the Heritage Foundation was a totally "purist" organization, they wouldn't get as much accomplished every year as they consistently do.

Editorials, analysis, commentary, etc, are rarely classified as breaking news items. Vanity threads even less so.

...Some you win, some you lose....

I agree with your sentiment.

And, if Delay, Bush, Frist, and Cheney are for it I'm in. The analysis as provided above is too simplistic. The world is ending! The world is ending! Norwood Dingle! 100,000 new cops!

The real facts are that people who get prescription medicine need less surgury and hospital care. So, it should be covered. Further, the average senior pays $600 for prescription medicine per year. This bill requires all participating seniors to pay roughly $600 in premiums.

Further, Medicare is broken and will collapse causing great misery. The only useful reform is to bring competition (a thing that 50% of Congress cannot stand - read the Rats). A compassionate conservative cannot stand by and let people suffer. Sorry, it's not a secret.

This bill was a great compromise and I'm impressed that they got it to pass. This took some stones. Would I like the rats in the country to join in helping or at least provide constructive criticism? Yes. But, they won't even agree on something as simple as preventing terrorists from killing their children.

People need to have a little faith. And do a little more work before flying off the handle. The Press won't report the truth and you won't get it by reading internet chat boards.

If conservatives can't trust Bush, Cheney, Frist, and Delay, then start stocking the beans away now.

It sounds strange, but it is like I have a love/hate relationship with the Bush Administration. I believe in the Administration's cause in the War against Terror; President Bush could not be more right in the decisions he has made since 9/11 with regards to this.

However, the Administration's choices on the domestic front have often been less than desirable for me; this bill is one example. After I heard the rumors regarding the bullying, my regard for the Administration went down a little.

He promised this bill during the campaign.

This bill, or a bill 1/3 the size with stronger privatization components? If the President promised a tax cut, and delivered on a $1 reduction for each citizen, would you say he's fulfilled his campaign obligation?

I will still vote for President Bush though; I have a high regard for the people working around him, and have heard many positive stories from many people with regards to the way they work. The bullying rumor came as a surprise to me, which is why I still think of it as a rumor, albiet one that is probably true.
