Re: Complaint emailed to FoxNews Tonight
Posted on 12/07/2003 6:11:22 PM PST by annyokie
To anyone in the FoxNews Division who has an ounce of decorum:
Would you please instruct your news reader's to preface their commentary when speaking of the President to show the proper respect and to say President Bush (regardless whom it might be), not "Bush"........
A terrible example for our kids and it's not too hot for the adults either, most recent example was this evening on Fox Reports by Laurie "what's her name" !!
Yes I am a Republican and it does not help my attitude towards your network when YOUR readers say "President Clinton", as I do by the way and so should all of you whether you like the SOB or not is immaterial and in the next sentence say "BUSH" as your spitting out something vile!!
Sincerely,
Archdean

Actually .. the proper reference when speaking ABOUT a former president, is to say "former President X". Actually, this is incorrect. The proper form, believe it or not, is to refer to the person mentioned or addressed by the position he held prior to the last position held, after he is out of office.
So technically, President Bush would be correct. Governor Clinton would be correct, also.

Thanks for reminding me about that. I've been meaning to send Rush an e-mail along the same lines. I've noticed he does the same thing.
Now that I think of it, a lot of talking heads on TV and radio call him "Bush" instead of President Bush.
To: Conservababe
Hmmmm? Who told you that ..?? The first President Bush, is not referred to as Vice President Bush ..?? Your logic escapes me.

I'm in full agreement with you on this; FOX is a bit negligent I think. With the alphabet news groups, I think it is highly intentional to omit the proper term of respect since they have no respect for the Prez.

OMG! That election night was so funny. I stayed up until 4 am (NY). The DUmmies were freaking out. I couldn't have asked for a better time.
When that "All your Senate are belong to us" popped up, I lost it. It was beautiful!

Is it alright to still refer to Ted Kennedy as Drunk Fat Ted? or to refer to Senator Byrd as "sheets"?

I don't see what is wrong with people.........I keep coming back and reading the latest osts on this thread, but it's not getting any better.
You beat me to the explanation of why this is done by about 50 seconds - yet no one seems to want to acknowlege what is just general SOP.
It's a matter of expediency - whether saving print space or broadcast time - the title is used the first time and then dropped.
I will admit that occasionally it is probably done out of total disrespect for a person, but in general that is not the case, even in the alphabet soup of print and broadcast media.

I've used "President Bush" or "Mr. Clinton"(I can not use the title for him...ever). I have heard news people refer to murders as Mr. and alledged whatever, even after the conviction. I was taught that Mr. was a title of respect. After conviction they should just be referred to as - that murdering bastard.

And these two omit the title just as much as the other two do, regardless of who it is they are talking about.
As long as the proper title has been stated once in the context of the story, it is not needed again.

Anybody get the impression that Fox has many more registered Democrats than Republicans on their shows? I sure do.
