If, and that's a big if, the majority of Iraqi people really want liberation and self rule and are willing to die for it there is a chance this will work.

I'm somewhat mystified by Newt's behavior. If he felt so compelled to discuss the issue, there were avenues available, other then going to the media and whining in public. I trust the Bush administration and believe they have a handle on Iraq. It would defintiely help matters if Saddam Hussein was found and removed from the scene of the crime and from the public debate. But short of that happening anytime soon, Newt should have kept his mouth shut.

Things went great at first when you took back Congress in 1994 and then the great victory went "over a cliff" when you, Dole and other Republicans couldn't figure out how to deal with a government shutdown. So don't start preaching to others about not being able to follow through.

While there may be accuracy in your assessments in principle, pragmatically that sort of heavy-handed tactic would not be accepted nor tolerated these days. Either in America or by the rest of the world.

It would be foolish to attempt to apply the same paint brush to the current situation as was used 55 years ago IMO....no matter how tempting it might be.

They have made mistakes. Totally disbanding the Iraqi army was a big one. It was a Pentagon/Bremer decision. All those trained military without a paycheck was a perfect set-up for Saddam and Izzat Ibrahim. They have billions of dollars to hire them and the fired military are mad at us because we fired them. Lots of GOP senators think it was a wrong move.

As with most hit pieces in the mainstream press, this article fails to include what Newt might have done instead.
I can't believe that the stupid implication, hand over power, fight the war all over again endless cycle is what Newt is suggesting.

Did anyone think to ask him what practical realistic alternative he might have chosen?

That's precisely what I was thinking. I scanned the comments to see if anyone else what thinking the same thing. You are right on. And Hillary was all over the news shows this morning too. The Clintoons must have something on him BIG TIME. He was never the same since the handshake with Billy Jeff Clintoon on stage about some reform they agreed to work on.

Lets not form a circular firing squad here. I fully support the war and the reasons for engaging in it. But to quash all opinions critical of some aspects of it is unproductive. I personally feel that we run the risk of politicizing this war and turning it into a pc/un quagmire. I think we should have been more vigorous in including the previous Iraqi military structure in the reconstruction. Military leaders could have been vetted and included more rapidly in the new army. Since were not interested in annexing the country, Lets turn it over to them as quickly as possible.
