[history]
Department of Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge will announce today a system to allow commercial trucks to clear customs at the Mexican border in as little as 5 seconds by using preregistered ID cards.
A similar system has had success regulating trucks from Canada, but the less-secure southern border could pose challenges.

It looks like we will be leaving our border security to "trust". No inspections!
Without border security, we have no homeland security.

There goes the trucking industry in the United States. Soon there will be NO AMERICANS with jobs.
To: ETERNAL WARMING
I don't like the trucking industry being opened to Mexican drivers either. However, my main concern is the security of this country.
A large percentage of the crimes in Mexico go unpunished. Therefore, there is no criminal record on alot of the crooks. There is not a Mexican trucker in Mexico that Tom Ridge won't "trust". The way that I see it is that they won't detain or search any trucks.

Let's see. Long before the truck driver gets to the border, a gang of terrorists bent on destroying us at any cost hijack the truck and sail right through the border crossing like a motorist with a tolltag.
Gee whiz!
I'm sooooo tired of our officials' stupidity--dangerous stupidity, may I add. We must protest this action immediately.
Best regards,
Penny

I forgot to include the home page URL for Homeland Security where you'll find a "contact us" submission form:
http://www.dhs.gov/dhspublic/contactus
I urge everyone reading this to go to the drop-down "security issues" menu and send scathing commentary. Thank you.

As it stands now, Mexican trucks still have no access to the US.
The pre-clearance applies to the cross-border shuttles and Canada bound Mexican trucks who have been crossing the US to reach Canada since 1996.

"As it stands now, Mexican trucks still have no access to the US."
It certinly isn't GW Bush's fault that these trucks have no access to the US. Just think, it is only a matter of time before these trucks will be running throughout the US without being inspected.

How come these trade "plans" and trade "deals" always leave us holding the $hit end of the stick?

But George Grayson, a professor at the College of William and Mary in Virginia and a specialist on the U.S.-Mexican border, said he did not think the new program will pose significant new security risks. So we'll only be contending with just the usual old security risks. I feel much better now.

I'm sorry, but that's hogwash. We're not talking about airliners, which generally can't land without being noticed. Once a truck crosses the US/Mexico border, it has 1500-plus miles of unfettered access to the US.
