The US25 million will go to groups that help protect the nations's heavily logged forests.
The U.S. Agency for International Development has pledged US25 million over the next five years to protect Mexico's forests, the U.S. Embassy said Friday.
The donation will funnel US900,000 to Rainforest Alliance, an environmental group that works with logging interest to ensure they obtain wood from sustainable forests and the develops new markets for certified timber.
On Dec. 1, a Mexican logging concern that has been working with Rainforest Alliance since 2000, the Ejido Pueblo Nuevo in northern Durango state, will make its first furniture shipment to Swedish retailer IKEA, the Embassy said.
...snip...
Vicente Fox said the only way to truly protect the forests is to ensure the economic future of impoverished communities who rely on illegal logging.

Oh, goodie.
Now we are going to export forest policy that builds up so much dead biomass that when a fire eventually starts the resulting forest firestorm is so hot it sterilizes the soil of all living organisms so that it takes years for new growth to even get started.
Misery definitely loves company.

How about "protecting" our own forests? The Klamath National Forest and the Shasta- Trinity are clogged with dead and dying trees and brush. That money could be used to make a dent in fuel reduction projects that are desperately needed.
All of our forest communities were listed as severely at risk of catastrophic wildfire in the federal register listing. I cannot see how they can justify giving money to another country to "protect" their forests when people in the USA are at risk of losing life and property from lack of forest fuels management in federal forests.
