Shevardnadze blames Soros for his downfall
By ASSOCIATED PRESS
Former Georgian President Eduard Shevardnadze accused multibillionaire philanthropist George Soros of donating millions of dollars to an uprising earlier this month that forced him to resign.
Shevardnadze said in a newspaper interview that he could not point to specific countries that had backed the uprising. Instead, international groups, such as the Soros Foundation, had financed the opposition, he said.
Three weeks of protests culminated in Shevardnadze's resignation on Nov. 23. Shevardnadze has previously accused U.S. ambassador Richard Miles of encouraging the opposition, an allegation U.S. officials denied.
In the interview published Sunday in the Israeli newspaper Yediot Ahronot, Shevardnadze said the "principles and goals" of the Soros Foundation was to lead to a situation similar to Yugoslavia, where mass protests in 2000 lead to Slobodan Milosevic's ouster.
"I am shocked how international organizations can get involved in the internal issues of a country in such a brash manner and to such a great extent," Shevardnadze told Yediot Ahronot. "I can't give you exact numbers, but one ambassador told me that we are talking about $2.5 million to $3 million."
Soros opened an Open Society branch in Moscow in 1987 with the aim of helping the Soviet Union make the transition to democracy. The group has been active in trying to bolster civil society and the rule of law in the former Soviet Union.
In addition, Shevardnadze said he did not blame Georgian security forces for failing to stop the protests or forecasting their scope.
"They are not the Israeli Mossad that knows everything a person is thinking on the other end of the earth," Shevardnadze said, comparing what he described as Georgia's fledgling security forces to Israel's well-established spy service.

Is Soros turning into a James Bond villain? You know, the super wealthy megalomaniac who wants to control the world? I have no problem with the rich using their money for international charities, regular political donations, etc. but when they start using it to actually change governments to suit their needs I start to worry. Until now, he's used currency markets to crush economies and effect change indirectly, now he's getting directly involved.

Soros is dangerous. He's influencing international stability.
Democracy was very difficult to get in the former Soviet republics. Hopefully, it doesn't come crashing down because of Soros socialist (or commie) views.

Remember how the democRATs painted Richard Mellon Scaife as an evil boogieman for contributing to conservative causes? What goes around comes around. I hope the Republicans go all out in telling the public who Soros is and how he is buying the democRAT party.

Very possible. The accumulation of massive wealth in the hands of the likes of Soros is very worrisome. Soros has already taken over control of the soft-money function of the Democrat Party at the behest of the Clintons (see Dick Morris' take at
http://www.nypost.com/postopinion/opedcolumnists/11710.htm ). He has also announced that he has no higher priority than putting a DemocRat into the White House. Today Schevardnaze; tomorrow George W. Bush?

I don't think that was an anti-semite remark, he was complimenting the Mossad which is a top-notch intelligence agency, if not the best.

You might want to do a Google search for information on Tividar Soros, the father (who changed his name to Szabo to keep his fortune and escape the Nazis). Then go on to the Soros brothers and their activities, and finally to Jonathan Soros, the son, who is involved with every Democrat insider element, from lawyers to philanthropists, known to man. It is a very disquieting tale.

That's exactly how I read it too. ...
I am no fan of Shevardnadze(sp?) but the person who is about to take his place is even worse. Forgot the name, whatever. Soros is all over Albania and a few other weak countries. Next year he is going after Bush, or so he says. If Clintigula wins we'll get to be the largest game in Soros' bag.

"But Soros's not a one diminsional character of pure evil, that's marc rich." I guess you missed it where he is dumping US dollars in an attempt to harm our economy before the 2004 elections? I really don't want the sob in the US again.
