If you'd like to be on or off this middle east/political ping list, please FR mail me.

I am writing from the living room of my apartment on Peaks Island, near the coast of Maine in the northeastern corner of the United States

This would be a fine time to move back to Egypt.

Maybe I have painted a rather bleak and frightening picture of what the peoples of our region face.

A cold winter?

As SJackson just pointed out, this bozo lives in Maine.

But things will not stop at Syria or Iran. Next can come changes in the geopolitical structure of Saudi Arabia, seizing of the oil fields and dismantling the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries. Then, or perhaps at the same time, will come Egypt's turn, for Egypt with its population, its potentialities, although weakened considerably, is still seen as a threat to Israel.

I hope so. But it's amazing how this guy can see any of this as detrimental to Arabs. In our "Pax Israelica" as he calls it, the average citizen has rights to freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom of the press, has a better quality of life, and something to live for, whereas in his world right now, the average Arab is utterly subjugated by his government, can be imprisoned, tortured, and murdered at the whim of any official, and the highest glory they can hope for is to suicide bomb a cafe. The only people threatened by our so-called neo-imperialism are the mullahs and despots who have, till now, enjoyed uncontrolled power over enslaved populations.

“the average citizen has rights to freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom of the press, has a better quality of life, and something to live for“

All you have to understand is that the powers that be in the Muslim world do not want that for their people. It would cause them to question why things are the way they are. Then the powers that be (Islamofacism) would be in a world of hurt.

Just another idiot posing as an intellectual to use his miniscule IQ and skewer anything that is not Islamic.

Ignorance and hate are not intellectual qualities. Neither are blind hatred of freedom, which is the natural condition of mankind.

This guy is a pure moron dressed as an intellectual, so he can pontificate his views and watch them proliferate.

Not so fast.

I'm an honorary Jew, too--and I've found out that I only make the B List of Evil Zionist Entities, and when it comes to World Domination, I can only expect my share to be Wisconsin.

Sulk. Pout.

I know what you mean- I guess with my bad luck I'd be given domination over Green Swamp Road in the lower end of the county...

After reading this, I now know why the followers of Islam are so prone to suicide--they are at a dead end in their beliefs and have left no way out.

LOL! My thoughts exactly. He may as well write:

As I write to you from my comfortable home in the free United States, overlooking the calm waters of the Atlantic ocean, you sit and sweat eating your camel dung and dates while waiting for the infidels to smite you.

What a maroon.

Must be talking about the Leo Strauss, Bloom, Wolfowitz, Kristol, and Podhortez (add our deal friend Horowitz) cabal which many Anglo-Saxon and Teutonic - Americans embrace. It really is the Enlightenment Philosophy of liberal democracies that he and the Euros despise.

The Arab elite is as blinded by hatred of the "Joooos" as any back-water, hillbilly, moonshiner is by "revenoooers." And their analysis of geo-politics is only slightly more sophisticated.

The fact that U. S. officials have had meetings with Israeli officials (notice how he utterly ignores all the meetings with Palestinian and Arab leaders which occurred with the same officials and around the same time?), is presented as prima facia evidence of a Zionist conspiracy. And what's more, the vast majority of the Arab world will drink this stuff up uncritically. That's to be expected.

But this sort of rabid anti-Jewish propaganda will also be given serious consideration - at the very least, equal footing with other analysis - by leftist Western audiences. From the Guardian to the New York Times; from the Sorbonne, to Harvard - Arab writers are finding audiences (including even some terribly confused Jews!) actually eager to buy into anti-Jewish propaganda only slightly more sophisticated than the Nazi era.

The most active supporters of his campaign will be Zionist forces, the Christian fundamentalist movement and the Catholic right. Together they constitute a powerful electoral force buttressed by multinationals -- especially those involved in arms manufacturing, in oil, in the pharmaceutical industry and in the media -- as well as many higher levels in the armed forces in a country undergoing rapid militarisation.

Will the Christian fundamentalist powerful electoral force please step forward, especially those involved in arms manufacturing, in oil, in the pharmceutical industry and in the media!

Hey this jerk left off agnostics, atheists, mormons, and about twenty other religious groups practicing their belief comfortably within this country. I even felt left out as I am not of the Jewish faith. He was so patently obvious!
Right wing Catholics?? A religion practiced long before "right wing" was built into the political language of the land. And he missed the Wiccans...sheesh

I wonder how long he has been "chained" to his abode in Maine by the evil doers. I suggest he find his camel, wake the critter up and hike home.

Or perhaps he could move north where they are now considering instituting Sharia Law into the legal practices of Canada. He'd feel right at home there and it isn't much colder than Maine.

D'ya think his brain froze?

Oh and whatsyername? Merry Christmas !!

"This would be a fine time to move back to Egypt."

Agreed. The piece is anti-semetic (every Jew is a 'Zionist'), and even Condoleeza Rice(!). He should be deported for sedition--or at the very least as an 'undesirable person'.
