You posted some real wisdom here:
It's a small thing, but you'd be surprised how many Americans (mostly liberals) travel the world and give their money to these Marxists. We know a very liberal and retired couple living in Marin. They are in some Habitat for Humanity group. Besides their few trips a year to build a house/shelter, they and their group are out about once a month in some commy hell hole or some other enemy of America.
My wife one time after listening to the female half of this group yak about their great trips to hell holes of the world asked my why they go to these horrible places.
I told her, that they usually go with about 15 other couples or enough singles to make at least 30 people. They spend 2-3000 $ visit per couple. That could be lot money dropped in one of these commy hell holes. If they donated that much money, they would be flagg. If they go on a trip of learning and "help", they probably have nothing to worry about.

One thing we can all do is never travel to any of these anti-US countries for vacation or anything else. Don't give them a dime of your money. It's a small thing, but you'd be surprised how many Americans (mostly liberals) travel the world and give their money to these Marxists. Exactly! Besides, the good ol' U.S. of A. has plenty of beautiful spots to visit. 50 states of fun and history. If the rest of the world hates us, who cares?! Not I. When the jihad moves into Paris, I can't wait for the frogs to come crying for our help. I wouldn't let one of my sons fight for anything that the French or Germans wanted protected.

We have been to Venezuela several times but before Chavez took power.
We were in Merida as well, but had no idea about the goings on at the university there.
Suffice it to say - never again at least until the monster is gone.
We do feel for the people as most are against chavez.

Colombia is quite rugged and vast.
I'd prefer to help AUC or some other outfit take care of business down there.
Very complicated with the dope trade thrown in.

I would suspect the reason for these tactic and Mr. Reyes comments is that the FARC is being pushed back by the Colombian government, with the support of the U.S. government and the Colombian people. FARC is trying to intimidate (through terrorism) the U.S. into removing their support. If I were POTUS, I would make sure that Mr. Reyes one day disappears, never to be seen again. He is as much of a terrorist as the FARC guys with the guns, even if he does wear a suit and travel by limo.
As for the U.S. armed forces taking on FARC in the jungles of Colombia, I have one word: NO. Such a fight would give too many advantages to the opposition.

Nor would I consent to US sending the boots. Providing logistic support, air power support and destroying the means of revenue for FARC would be my ideal way of or military getting involved. Something similar to our involvement in the Philippines. Colombia has enough boots and guns to carry out the ground war and its their country, so they should be doing most of the leg work anyways.

Mr. Reyes knows full well that the full might of the US military is occupied elsewhere. It would be naive to think that FARC and the multitude of other South American marxist groups are not aware of not only the current inability of the US to deploy against them in any great strength but also of the political downside of expanding any military efforts.
South America is base for al-queda units for a number of reasons. They find easy access to our southern borders and fellow travelers in their war on the US. We will have to deal with this snakes' nest one day but until we can focus there with strength the threat will grow...bet on it.
