Bill of Rights Day Celebration, 2003

The annual Bill of Rights Day Celebration will be held in Loveland on December 14, 2003 from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. at the Pulliam Building. The event will feature speakers and displays from several groups concerned about our precious Bill of Rights.

America is a great country. We were founded by the Declaration of Independence and our republic form of government is detailed in our Constitution. What sets us apart from every other form of government, however, is our Bill of Rights.

If you are concerned about the present condition of our Rights or what lies ahead for us you should attend this event. Topics will range from the unintended consequences of the Patriot Act, to the unfounded separation of church and state.

This year’s focus will be on what you can do to take action to defend the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. During this event you will be able to network with others who share your concerns. Music for the event will be provided by Colorado’s own Fife and Drum Corps.

I have sent out invitaions to many individuals and organizations to participate and will update the schedule as I get responses. This year's event will focus on getting involved.

Through my years as an activist I have found that Free Republic is the best place to post ideas and get people involved in many issues. I would like to have someone from Free Republic set up an information table and give speak about the benefits of FreeRepublic.com

My letter to the editor on the upcoming Bill of Rights Day Celbration

America is a wonderful country. We were founded by the Declaration of Independence and our republic form of government is detailed in our Constitution. What sets us apart from other governments is our Bill of Rights.

We almost did not have a Bill of Rights. The Federalists led by Alexander Hamilton and James Madison sought a swift passage of the Constitution which would have opened the way to tyranny by the central government.

In Virginia, Patrick Henry and George Mason opposed ratification of the Constitution by stating "It has no declaration of rights." In Massachusetts, Sam Adams and John Hancock favored a decentralized system of government and gave their support to ratification of the Constitution if amendments would be included to guarantee civil liberties.

When the proposed Constitution was made public a storm of controversy arose as most people only expected a revision of the Articles of Confederation. What they got was a new central government much like the British system they had just overthrown.

In a letter to James Madison, Thomas Jefferson wrote "A bill of rights is what the people are entitled to against every government on earth, general or particular, and what no just government should refuse, or rest on inference."

James Madison felt political pressure and agreed to add a Bill of Rights to the Constitution. On December 15, 1791, Virginia ratified the amendments and the Bill of Rights officially became part of the Constitution.

Our Founding Fathers knew that with rights came responsibilities. They set up a form of government of individual liberty and self governance based upon the principles in the Bible.

More recently, Harry Truman said, "If we do not have a proper fundamental moral background, we will finally end up with a...government which does not believe in rights for anybody except the State!"

There will be no excuses about being too busy doing your Christmas shopping. There will be plenty of wonderful stocking stuffers for your patriotic friends. The Second Amendment Sisters will have plenty of .50 cal pens, cook books and 'Gun Facts' books.

The Northern Colorado Fife an Drum Corps will be selling their music CDs and T shirts.
