My day started out at 8:30am with a phone call...Thanksgiving is cancelled. The sister-in-law, to whom's house we were going this year, got word that her father had died (they had issues and were NOT close). She wanted to keep cooking, but didn't want anybody to come. Soooo....we checked the cupboards, I got sent to the store, only Kmart was open, to get Tricuits and Wheat Thins so Libbi (where I stay every year) could have snacks for her boys. Then the sister-in-law's sons called and said they were coming in the afternoon and bringing Thanksgiving dinner. So we had dinner after all.

NEW YORK (Nov. 27) - Alex Calota saw it strutting near his hot dog cart about five months ago. It was a wild turkey - in Manhattan.
Calota is among the increasing number of New Yorkers reporting strange encounters with the wild birds best known this time of year as a main course.
"I give him corn, I give him bread, sometime cookies," Calota said of his feathered friend he came across at the Upper West Side's Riverside Park. Calota dubbed the bird "Giuliani," after former Mayor Rudy Giuliani.
Upper West Side residents have said that Giuliani has a partner, while a bird named Zelda was spotted hopping around Battery Park. And then there's the South Beach Psychiatric Center in Staten Island, where more than 60 birds are known to congregate.
"They come out into the parking lots. They're absolutely fearless," said city Parks Commissioner Adrian Benepe.
The department recently asked the state Department of Environmental Conservation for a permit that would let it move the turkeys from outside the psychiatric hospital to parkland, most likely in Staten Island.
No one really knows why so many turkeys decided to make a psychiatric hospital their home. Benepe said they've been there for years. The hospital didn't return phone calls seeking comment.
Parks officials have tried to introduce endangered species recently into the big city, giving a home to four bald eagles in northern Manhattan and trying to acclimate owls in Central Park.
But Benepe says the city isn't necessarily trying to bring more turkeys into the parks - it just has no choice. The wild turkey population in New York state has grown from near-extinction - about 2,000 in the 1950s - to 65,000 in the 1990s, he said.
"There's relatively good habitat and relatively few predators," the commissioner said. "The only predator who's going to get a turkey is a very fast dog, which is unlikely, or a human with a gun - and hunting isn't allowed."
The lone birds seen strutting around random parks in the city are likely snacking on insects and seeds, officials said. They're not considered dangerous, although "they could give you a nip" if one comes too close, Benepe said.

A nest of turkey eggs is called a "clutch."Hmmmmm....I knew that snake eggs are a clutch, but turkey eggs......
Thanks, Linda, for all the neat turkey day info today, AND the fantastic pictures of our troops. ((HUGS))

We did that with Christmas dinner one year...
A sister-in-law was stranded at home in Casa Grande and couldn't make it to Phoenix for dinner. So the three families there just packed it all up and took it to them.
You know how it is, that's just one of the things families (at least our kind) do for each other.
It's a good thing...I'm glad it worked out for you and Libbi.

You are so right.....you just do what needs to be done to make it happen. BTW, Piper looks really cute in her Thanksgiving finery. Did Grampa get his share of holding? I got to hold Robbie, a little over 2 months old, while we wrote to the troops as the rest were eating. Libbi is a first time Gramma.

funny to think that a sight of a family member is warm and welcome, because when I see my family members packing up and heading my way, it means one of three things:
"divorce (theirs or ultimately mine)"
"they need a permanent address for their probation officer"
"eviction/foreclosure"
ha ha ha ha!

Sometimes I wonder if life can get any better than it is right now...and then it does.
Holding Robbie, you discovered what I feel. Makes your heart kinda go all squishy.
You're pretty special, for Libbi to share this with you. I'm thinking, big hearts are always rewarded.

What!?!?
Are you the big sister everyone runs to when they can't make it on their own? Sounds like you ought to just cut and run!
No, check that. I know what you mean, because I have similar issues with one branch of my family tree. We tend to tolerate them, politely, but no crashing at our place!

actually I was reminiscing about my parents and in-laws! he he he!!
But, on a more positive note (and after many years of therapy and prozac- he he he!) I have the formula to life:
The most destructive habit......................Worry
The greatest Joy................................Giving
The greatest loss.....................Loss of self-respect
The most satisfying work....................Helping others
The ugliest personality trait...................Selfishness
The most endangered species..............Dedicated leaders
Our greatest natural resource................Our youth
The greatest "shot in the arm"..............Encouragement
The greatest problem to overcome....................Fear
The most effective sleeping pill........Peace of mind
The most crippling failure disease............Excuses
The most powerful force in life...................Love
The most dangerous pariah...................A gossiper
The world's most incredible computer...........The brain
The worst thing to be without....................Hope
The deadliest weapon.........................The tongue
The two most power-filled words............."I Can"
The greatest asset ..........................Faith
The most worthless emotion.....................Self-pity
The most beautiful attire..........................SMILE!
The most prized possession.......................Integrity
The most powerful channel of communication........Prayer
The most contagious spirit ...............Enthusiasm

Ms. Lucie, you've broken the code. What else could there possibly be to know?
Thanks for telling us that...I hope your words of wisdom help a lurker find their way to a better life.
(You've reminded me of a bad habit or two I could stand to lose!)

It's chilly outside and getting late, my family and I are going to call it a night.
My thanks go to all who visit here - those who try to make life a bit easier for our troops and their families, and those troops and family members who look to us for support.
{{{HUGS}}} to all.
