[history]
Nevada memo to George Bush: When making a first presidential visit to a state, use the right pronounciation of its name.
Bush, in Las Vegas on Tuesday, repeatedly said Ne-vah-da. To properly pronounce Nevada, the middle syllable should rhyme with gamble.

"Nevada or nevado" means 'snow-covered, snowy, white as snow' in spanish, according to Cassell's spanish dictionary.
If Cassell's is correct, then our president's pronounciation is correct and these critics don't know what they are talking about.

He's the president, and he ought to get it right. I don't like brocolli. I'm the President of the United States. I shouldn't have to eat brocolli.

W pronounced it like a Texan, as God intended English to be pronounced.

So he used the Spanish pronunciation. Big freakin' deal.
What a morbid waste of the AP wire this was.

Well, at least he didn't pronounce it "Nevader" as JFK would have done.
We got called "Oklahomer" by that same former president who wasn't very popular in Oklahomer.

Good catch.
And it's ridiculous to suggest that "Nev-ah-da" is wrong. I am certain there are people who pronounce it that way. I am even willing to bet that if I had the time and resources I could go back and find audio clips of various other national politicians pronouncing it that way.
The (alleged) fact that hearing it pronounced that way "sets people's teeth on edge" [well, some people who are Nevadans, anyway] doesn't mean anything one way or the other. (Some) people who live in San Francisco hate hearing the nickname "Frisco" but that doesn't make "Frisco" somehow illegitimate or "incorrect".

The Dems have finally found their issue.

Isn't "Nevada" a Spanish word, which would mean it's properly pronounced Ne Vah Da?
My aunt and uncle lived in Nevahda for several years in the 60s, and always pronounced it Nevahda.
Anyway, quick! Take a picture of the web page before the ignoramuses catch their typo.

I know, this makes no sense at all. How do you possibly rhyme the middle syllable with a two syllable word?

So vote for Dean because he'll say the wrong things right?
To: honeygrl
I call it Ne-vah-duh too. I didn't know there was an alternate pronunciation. To pronounce it the Nevada way you have to have adenoid trouble and a sinus infection, or be Teddy Kennedy So9

I can't figure it out either, and I have been there many times. I have NEVER heard anyone pronounce it so that it rhymes with GAMBLE. I hear it two ways all of the time, but neither of them rhyme with gamble! I am lost here! This is just more stupidity from the Socialists. (you pronounce socialist so that it rhymes with communist)

State Senate Minority Leader Dina Titus, D-Las Vegas, said the mispronunciation shows Bush, who won the state in the 2000 election, doesn't care much about the state. NO, it shows that Bush is from Texas, which is how we pronounce it. Since there are more of us than there are of them, they are the ones "mispronuncing" it.
To: honeygrl
You are correct ... Nevada is a Spanish word. If I remember correctly, it means "snowy". Please correct me if I am wrong.
Like the "a" in Colo-rah-do ...
