NEVER FORGET
A Holiday Greeting from 'WE WERE SOLDIERS ONCE and YOUNG' Co-Author JOSEPH GALLOWAY:
Friends:
As we head into the holidays it is time to think of the airplanes which land every night at Andrews AB outside Washington carrying 12 to 15 wounded soldiers from Afghanistan and Iraq bound for Walter Reed Army Hospital.
Many are evacuated straight out of the field with no possessions. They need some of the smaller things to make life a little easier.
A list of what is needed and where to send it is attached.
GOD Bless Them.
JOE GALLOWAY
-----------------------------------------------------
The American Red Cross at Walter Reed is looking for incidentals/comfort items for sick and wounded Armed Forces Personnel now recuperating at the hospital. When someone stationed in Iraq, Afghanistan or elsewhere is wounded or falls ill, they're immediately evacuated and eventually end up stateside. It takes weeks for their personnnel effects to catch up with them.
Things that the Red Cross is asking for are:
telephone cares of at least 30 minutes / rolling luggage (small), totes, carry-ons / individually wrapped snacks / magazines / notepads, pens / playing cards and games / sweat pants and shirts (all sizes) /
All items should be addressed to:
ATTN: Barbara Green / Walter Reed Army Medical Center / 6900 Georgia Ave, N.W. / Washington, DC 20307-5001 /
Checks should be made out to the American Red Cross.
For more information, call (202) 782-2080 or e-mail Barbara.Green.1@AMEDD.army.mil

What time are you leaving? I'd love to go but can't risk losing my van!
I'm a scaredy cat around here with snow - not because of my driving in it, but because so many others don't know how. I experienced some of it today - folks either going to slowly or too fast. They just can't gauge weather conditions correctly.
FReepmail me?

Teach me to read the date on posts I respond to. I now realize your post was for going on Thanksgiving.
Mea culpa. It's been a long day and the weather hasn't helped.

I realize that this is a late reply but phone cards can always be sent after Christmas!
I've heard from several guys that the best cards to send are AT&T. They get to actually use more of the minutes on the cards, and AT&T seems to be the company they connect with when they use the phones from wherever they are.
Just thought I'd stick in a late two cents worth.

Confirms what I've heard.
I'll be including one in the priority letter I'm sending to Walter Reed tomorrow.

For those interested in buying some of the AT&T pre-paid calling cards, the store locator is at this link:
http://www.consumer.att.com/prepaidcard/fy/fas.html I checked a few zip codes and it appears that they can usually be purchased at US Post Office, as well as some stores.

Wait a minute, wait just a minute there soldier. Your favorite NY Senator said Americans were questioning our effort in Iraq.

TV Heads-up for Wednesday evening, 12-10-03
CBS's "48 Hours Investigates" tonight will be about our troops who are in
Walter Reed recovering from loss of limb.
Although there may be some CBS politiking...sometimes the majors networks slip up
and just give a good straight news story. Hopefully they will tonight.
The show is appearing in the last hour of primetime (10 PM here on The Left Coast),
so I suppose that's 9PM for Central Time Zone.
Check your listings...and pass the word quickly if you get here before the show.

pardon the ping, but I thought post 157 might be of interest, as y'all have posted
to this thread.
And please pass the word to other potentially interesting parties; show airs TONIGHT
(Wednesday)
Thanks in advance...

I'm sorry I got your messages about the CBS show late. Were they respectful of our Soldiers?
Walter Reed Hospital, and the Red Cross Staff there, are so ...OVERWHELMED... with the items we've been sending into our wounded Hero Soldiers there who are back from Iraq that we've been asked to...HOLD OFF.
That's one message that can never come too late. Do they know how much we care, I hope?
Thank you!
