Friends:

As we head into the holidays it is time to think of the airplanes which land every night at Andrews AB outside Washington carrying 12 to 15 wounded soldiers from Afghanistan and Iraq bound for Walter Reed Army Hospital.

Many are evacuated straight out of the field with no possessions. They need some of the smaller things to make life a little easier.

A list of what is needed and where to send it is attached.

The American Red Cross at Walter Reed is looking for incidentals/comfort items for sick and wounded Armed Forces Personnel now recuperating at the hospital. When someone stationed in Iraq, Afghanistan or elsewhere is wounded or falls ill, they're immediately evacuated and eventually end up stateside. It takes weeks for their personnnel effects to catch up with them.

Things that the Red Cross is asking for are:

telephone cares of at least 30 minutes / rolling luggage (small), totes, carry-ons / individually wrapped snacks / magazines / notepads, pens / playing cards and games / sweat pants and shirts (all sizes) /

All items should be addressed to:

Checks should be made out to the American Red Cross.

The first time I ever read a Joe Galloway piece this is what I read (BARF ALERT) in my local paper. I scrambled everywhere trying to find the link - I was angered by what he wrote and I wanted to share it with some fellow conservative veterans - but my local paper's site didn't link to it. I only managed to find it through a Google search and it was only in one place. Please be leary of good ol' Joe's columns in the future. I have no doubt that he's well intentioned when it comes to our troop's comfort but I just thought you'd want to know where he comes from at times. I wrote hime back and here was my response to his piece: I have to ask: Is this a responsible piece from a Senior Military Correspondent or a clear partisan attack on the current leadership? Does Mr. Galloway realize just who has been responsible for destroying the fabric of the military? Presidents Carter and Clinton come to my mind first. Has Mr. Galloway checked out the recent recruiting and retention numbers of our armed services? They're up and recently a starting NFL football player was willing to quit football to join the Army and become a Ranger. Am I missing something? Mr. Galloway writes that, "...there's no time for non-commissioned officers - the sergeants who are the backbone of any great army - to go to the schools they need to get better at their jobs and earn promotions..." Does Mr. Galloway really believe that tactics and combat leadership are better learned in a formal classroom setting as opposed to the real thing, "baptism by fire" method? And finally Mr. Galloway criticizes the method of offering multiple nominees to fill senior officer jobs as opposed to just sending one individual to the interviews conducted by the Office of the Secretary of Defense. Having not been a senior officer I cannot be sure if just sending one person to an interview was ever a standard practice. But if it was the norm, I think the 'new' system has more desirable results. Is it just me - I thought competition was a good thing?

That article is Joe's candide and honest view. It is also a view that will find agreement within many of the military. Requiring multiple candidates infers that Rumsfeld does not trust the Army to recommend the best man for the job.

Joe is a true friend of the Army and has defended it repeatedly in response to attacks from those who would rather seen the Army reduced to a token force or eliminated entirely. I've yet to meet him, but have several colleagues who have worked with him in connection to the Army and the writing of official of Military History of the Army.

I never left with a dry eye.

I'm taking a packing box to do this with my Grandchildren. Need suggestions for items. What kind of players do they have for music (CD's) and/or videos??

I wish I could help you, but I don't know.

I know there was an appeal made for "D" cell batteries so I assume the players are battery operated.
There's no place in the world that I know of that you can plug in an electrical device with a cord made for the US, like a player, without an adaptor, so it's logical they would have battery operated players.

...The Moving Vietnam Walls are a great Service of Love to Amerians around the country, always have been, for those not able to go to Washington, D.C. It's like being there, but then in Spirit it really is being there.

...I remember my 2nd visit to a Moving Vietnam Wall many years ago outside Knott's Berry Farm's Independance Hall Replica in California. I went to pay honor to my U.S. 7th Cavalry's 305 Names from the Battle of IA DRANG-1965 that fill a large section of 3rd Panel East.

...Afterwards I stepped way back to look at the whole Moving Wall and was stunned to see how our 3rd Panel East Section became but a speck when seen with the enormity of all the Names of our Hero Dead from the Vietnam War.

That's when it all REALLY hit me Big Time.. 3,000 miles from Washington, D.C.
