Republican Party of VA statement on Warner Tax Hikes

STATEMENT OF RPV CHAIRMAN KATE OBENSHAIN GRIFFIN --Regarding Release of Governor Warners Tax Plan--
RICHMOND With todays announcement, Governor Mark Warner has officially broken his solemn campaign promise not to raise our taxes. Mark Warner campaigned for Governor and repeatedly denied all claims that he would raise taxes once he was in office...
The fact is I will not raise taxes. My plan states it. Ive said it throughout this campaign. You can say it 20 more times, but the people know the difference. [October 10, 2001 Gubernatorial Debate]
State government must live within its means. It isnt the governments money; its the peoples money. [Mark Warners Action Plan for Virginia (2001); Page v, The Commitment]
Mark Warners proposal will raise the taxes of every single Virginian. With the Warner sales tax increase, every single Virginian will pay more in taxes next year than they did this year. Mark Warner has engaged in a potentially devastating tradeoff of Virginia jobs for short-term revenue growth.
Mark Warner has no mandate to raise the taxes of the hard working men and women of Virginia just to pay for his overdue campaign promises. Just last year, he had a conversation with the voters when the Warner referendums to increase taxes were defeated by embarrassingly large margins.
Just three weeks ago, Virginians overwhelmingly elected Republicans to represent them in the General Assembly. Republican candidates across the Commonwealth campaigned on cutting taxes and the voters agreed in overwhelming numbers. There is no question the General Assembly will have a budget next year and it will be balanced, but the burden is squarely on those who want to raise taxes.

Like to hear more about how Warner justifies his flip.
He's a Democrat, maybe that's all we need to know."

The problem was that Earley, the Republican candidate for governor, was lame. Although I didn't, a lot of people voted for Warner on this basis.

It's okay. Governor Warner assured us two years ago he wouldn't raise taxes. And then of course there was the big embarassment of him not-really-trying-to-raise-our-taxes in NoVa and Tidewater last year. Certainly he'd learn from that debacle, right? :-p

I voted for Earley, on the grounds that a lame-ass moron was preferable to a disingenuous, double-talking, slimy, smarmy, slick, damyankee Democrat.
To: Gopher Broke
When this moron got elected, I came back from sea and received the news. I just couldn't believe my fellow Virginians bought into the Democrats "fiscal conservative" lie. And when he closed down a lot of the DMV offices, I said "Well, we official have an idiot in the governors mansion". Typical Democrat - make him try to balance a budget and all hell breaks loose. Just one question - do we here in the Old Dominion have the recall right ?
