A pit bull was shot, a cop and a dog walker were rushed to the hospital, and a police horse named "AAA Andy" was badly hurt but alive -- all this after a chance encounter between two animals on a crisp Sunday at San Francisco's Golden Gate Park.

This was a foolish owner. Most all pit bull owners know better, you never let the dog off theleash in public, never.

People like this give the breed a bad name. These dogs have been bred for companionship, and protection. They are one of the best breeds for apartments, and specially for Children, (see here: http://www.akc.org/breeds/recbreeds/amstaff.cfm

) but they do have rules, and allowing them off the leash in Public is a serious no-no.

The dogs are bred to kill large animals and many of the owners are not able to control them.

Earlier this year, a neighbor and I shot and killed another neighbor's Pit Bull after it attacked another neighbor's Beagle.

Yeah, like this woman could have controlled this beast.

I wish you one behind a 4 ft fence like I and my grandkids are confronted with.

Yeah I wonder what the Breed of Peace(TM) owners would say had this pit bull grabbed the officer by the throat when he got thrown from the horse?

Or if the fall killed him.

I was chased by a pit bull mix only to realize that the dog was being friendly. However, when you see a pit bounding out of the darkness towards you, you aren't thinking "aww how cute!"

I ALMOST shot the dog but thought it'd be better to gauge how fast the dog was running and the look on its face. Fortunately, I saw that the dog was not bound to eat me, so I had no reason to kill it.

I'm afraid that one day, someone and their g-damn dog is going to cost a loved one his/her life. Either by attack or by accident(tripping my mother when she's on the steps cuz the stupid broad owner doesnt think a leash is needed)

No doubt, but what probably happened is he got a hit or two in and the dog ran off so fast he couldn't, in good conscience, continue to fire with people in the area and no good bead on the target.

Shoulda' emptied his mag into that dog.

In my scenario, I hit the dog with three .357 rounds. That got the dog's attention, (he dropped the Beagle), my neighbor put six or seven 9mm rounds into the beast.

Absolutely! This owner is one of the 99% of dog owners who give the other 1% a bad name by thinking that the rules don't apply to them and their dog.

These dogs have been bred for companionship, and protection.

and fighting, and attacking other people and their pets. You don't want to leave out the most important reasons that people have them do you?

They are one of the best breeds for apartments, and specially for Children

You gotta be kidding, unless you absolutely hate kids. I suppose these are the best breed for children if you like to see children bitten.

No I am not kidding, read the AKC website that I posted. When my kids dragged me to the Humane Sociaty to get "the cutest dog they ever saw" I was shocked to see it was a pit bull. So I did some research. It seems that the AKC recommends them for kids, and through the 2 years that we have had ours, they were exactly right. Our dog (KC is her name), is a very loving and gentle dog. She loves all of the kids, even other people's. It has never bitten, or even growled at anyone's kids. This experience is shared by 2 of my neighbors, who also own the same breed of dog.

Buying a pit bull to "take care of children" is really asking for trouble. No matter how "safe" the AKC says they are, the record of vicious attacks on children by pit bulls says otherwise.

Any dog is dangerous but many are very even tempered and are far safer -- Labrador Retrievers would be my choice to mind my 5 and 7 year. Pit bulls have been breed to attack sad to say...

Pit bulls are taking over. I was at an animal shelter last week, and at least half of the dogs looked like they were part pit bull. This is one reason I would hesitate to adopt a shelter dog--you don't really know what you're getting. Even a purebred dog can surprise you with unexpected aggression. With a pit bull, I'd be surprised if it wasn't aggressive.
