Have it your way - Burger King adopts corporate policy to allow breast-feeding in restaurant

Salt Lake City-AP -- From now on, mothers who wish to breast-feed their babies are welcome to do so in Burger King restaurants.

The fast-food chain announced its new policy Friday, one day before a planned "nurse-in."

Members of an international group that promotes breast-feeding had planned the protest after a mother in suburban Salt Lake City was asked to feed her baby in a bathroom or leave the restaurant. A customer had complained to Burger King employees.

Under the new policy, employees are told if a customer complains about a mother who's breast-feeding, they are to explain that breast-feeding is permitted in the restaurant and suggest that the complaining customer move.

Burger King says its new policy had been in the works and wasn't timed to defuse the threatened protest.

I think they should take the next, obvious, step: sell spectator tickets.

As a mother who breastfed her babies, I have to say this is ignorant. I don't want to go into a restaraunt (fast food or not) and see someone's breasts. I never subjected anyone to having to see mine.

Breastfeeding may be a natural thing, but there is a time and place for it, and I don't believe that place is in full view of diners.

Then they can do without my business. I breast fed all three kids...I never once did it in public. I don't know about you, but I don't want to watch that while I'm eating.

Well, if a woman were to doff her shirt and brassiere and show off her breasts, I think she should be asked to leave. But most mothers who breast feed their infants do so discretely. With the proper type of attire and a suitable cloth, it's possible for a baby to be fed without anybody except the baby getting any view of the mother's breast or, for that matter, for anyone who isn't looking closely to notice that the baby is being fed.

True. My wife breastfeeds the kid most anywhere. It's not exactly a showy production. What is she supposed to do? Cower in some grubby toilet stall with the baby?

"What is she supposed to do?"

The car? Her house? Maybe a private room at work? You know -- what women did for many years before it suddenly became a "necessity" to suckle their infants in front of the gaping public.

I breastfed all three of mine, but never in public. If we were at a relatives house, I'd go into another room, not because I was flashing anyone, but just to relax. I learned early on that the baby picks up quickly on the mother's mood.
