Partly because he was a highly experienced military commander during WWII. But only partly. In many places they weren't timid at all; Cuba and VietNam and Berlin for example. Hungary. The weren't afraid to shoot down the U-2 and make an issue of it. And so on.

Larry, you are not even the slightest bit acquainted with "reasoning." Everything I posted has been carefully and logically reasoned. You behavior on this thread he consisted of saying you disagree, but not saying why (hint: you need reasons in order to reason), posting links to long articles without diseminating (your ability to use a search engine indicates that you are aware that there are others who have approached this subject and may or may not agree with you), or simply making excuses for Kennedy (which generally supports the Hitchens's argument that the Kennedy personality cult is based on fabrication.

I'll admit it. I'm no good at reasoning by your definition of the term. But then, I don't call what you are doing "reasoning." I call it weaseling.

Further color: PT boats sustained very few casualties when used according to their original design, as light torped craft. Most of the casualties came when they were later used as gunboats against Japanese resupply barges.
