I hate to put a damper on all of this enthusiasm for Herman Cain. It would be terriffic if he actually won. But Congressman Johnny Isakson is sitting atop $3 million cash-on-hand, six times more than Cain and Collins combined. And while rural conservative Democratic voters cross over to Republicans in the general election, they don't vote in G.O.P. primaries. Republican primaries are decided in the so-called doughnut counties, the ring of affluent suburbs circling Atlanta, and television is the way to reach them. In addition, I'd be surprised if Majette actually ran.

This is Isakson's 3rd time running statewide. In 1990, Iskason lost to Zell Miller, 53-45. In 1996, Isakson lost to Guy Milner in the GOP primary, 53-47. There, he portrayed himself as the pro-choice candidate. Because of that, Isakson burned a lot of bridges with social conservatives who make up a good portion of the primary. These people will not vote for Isakson regardless of how big his warchest is. If Isakson wants to be the GOP nominee, he better make sure he wins 51% of the vote in order to avoid the run-off. I have a feeling the GOP nominee will be whoever faces Isakson in the run-off.

You can buy a lot of grassroots with his money. Craig Benson did. He had volunteers and he used his money to boost our effectiveness 10 fold-- vans, free promotional items, etc.

***Money doesn't win elections in GA***

True, Roy Barnes spent $20 million for his re-election campaign. Sonny Perdue spent only $3 million. Perdue beat Barnes, 51-46.

I can only speak for GA.

Guy Millner outspent his opponents in 3 different races, he got beat each time.

Sonny Perdue was outspent 6 to 1 by Barnes last November, and won by 5-6 points.

No numbers. Just based on reports on the race. Out of nowhere candidates win when they have cash and they spend it. He has sent introductory videos out to activists, but he's not reaching the GOP and independent masses.

If Mac Collins wants to win the GOP primary, then he needs to convince the rural Yellowdogs of Middle and Southeastern GA to crossover and vote for him.

I think they'll vote for him before they vote for isakson.

Anyways, this is the primary, not the general.

GA is a pretty conservative state.

Most Democrats outside of Atlanta make northen GOP'ers seem communist.

Pure speculation on my part, but Majette running for the senate seat could hurt Cain's chances, bigtime.

Possibly. It's always something, eh?

From today's POLITICAL INSIDER:

http://www.ajc.com/metro/content/metro/insider/index.html

The opening Cynthia McKinney needs for her comeback bid

Roll Call, the Washington newspaper, continues its hunt for a big-name Democratic candidate for the U.S. Senate race in Georgia. On Wednesday, it reported that U.S. Rep. Denise Majette was researching the 2004 contest. "Majette has mentioned the idea of running to several colleagues in the Congressional Black Caucus, two of whom confirmed that Majette has talked to them but asked not to be identified," the newspaper said.

When confronted, the DeKalb County congresswoman played down her interest.

Our own thought: Most plugged-in Republicans have expressed surprise at the lack of traction within the campaign of Mac Collins, the congressman who's challenging Johnny Isakson in the GOP primary for the race. Democrats have to be seeing the same thing. And until they're convinced that Isakson will be bloodied and financially drained by a brawl in his primary, Democrats will hesitate to throw a big dog into the fight.

That said, Majette would be a most ironic candidate, given that Zell Miller was one of her first big backers in her 2002 victory.

"...but he's not reaching the GOP and independent masses."

I gotta disagree with you GSC...especially since you don't have any data.

I'm here in GA...he's reaching people, and I'm helping him. I'm not alone either... BTW, have you seen all the campaign stops he has made in the last several months? They are posted on his website...many with photos!

Nice Post! Enjoyed the photos...

Have sent several contributions (from far off Michigan) and will continue through next year .

Do you know who composes his campaign management team and what their backgrounds/track records are?
