And what are those banners worn across the dresses of the royal women?

Those are the sashes of the Order of the Garter.

How interesting. But, it does take away the effect of wearing a beautiful formal gown.

Ya gotta be kidding me. FEW are able to wear such a sash. BTW, it's made out of a watered-silk of some sort or other. At the bottom are major honors one has, Order of Bath, thistle, whatever. At the top the ladies have cameos of portraits of family memembers set on silk ribbons. These are personally given out by the sovereign.

...just a few tissues in her purse.

Don't you imagine the queen would have a HANKY, not tissues. :)

No, someone in the know says she carries her glasses and tissues in her purse.

She really should lend Hillary one of her lovely linen handkerchiefs to adorn the neckline of her pantsuit, though. That doily looked pretty silly. LOL

Actually, I heard on Fox and on this thread that no invitation has been extended personally, and not through the government, to a US president since 1918.

The Queen really must like George and Laura.

For shame! Her majesty will settle for nothing less than cubic zirconium!

"And what are those banners worn across the dresses of the royal women?"

The Queen and Princess Margaret are wearing ribbons for pinning their "orders" on. If they were men, they would be in full uniform and there would be lots of yardage for pinning stuff to. But I don't think these signify too much more than just somewhere to pin their badges. The blue might be significant, but I am not familiar with that part of it. Perhaps it's just dark blue to make the pins and badges show up better. And, the tiara the Queen is wearing was made for her Grandmother, Queen Mary, many years ago. It is gorgeous.

IIRC, that's the Star and Sash Badge (aka the "Lesser George") of the Most Noble Order of the Garter. It's worn on occasions other than the Order's functions (when the full regalia of cloak, great badge, and collar are worn).

It's worn on a sash over the left shoulder (unlike most other sashes which are worn over the right). If you look closely, you can see the badge on Her Majesty's right side at the bottom of the sash.

Here's a good photo showing the sash badge:

The Garter is the oldest and most prestigious English order (the Scots Thistle is actually about 100 years older) founded by King Edward III in 1348. Its membership was originally limited to the Sovereign, the Prince of Wales, and 24 Knights Companion, but it's been extended to other members of the royal family as well.

That is a beautiful picture. They all look so happy.
Makes alot of sense for the Queen to carry her glasses and tissues in her purse.
I too, used to wonder whatever was so important to carry a purse with every outfit.

The Queen has a beautiful smile.

She also looks her best in formal attire. I wish she would update her day dress - she has a lovely figure for a lady of her age, and the rather frumpy suits and square-cut dresses she wears don't do her justice.
