Two elected officials in Australia are facing possible legal sanctions thanks to a witch who complained to the government after the men warned voters of the woman's religious proclivities.

Witch Olivia Watts has filed a complaint against Mayor Brian Oates and his fellow councilor and Christian Rob Wilson, both elected in the city of Casey, Victoria, Australia. Watts is using as a tool new racial and religious vilification laws, according to a column in the Melbourne Herald Sun.

The witch, described as a "trans-gender naturopath," reportedly was offended when Wilson, a Christian college professor, told the voters of Casey to beware of Watts, who had run for city council, and announced she was a witch.

Wilson, the paper reports, urged the Casey Pastors Network of about 50 churches to hold a day of prayer to fight the "forces of evil" and ward off witchcraft.

Oates joined in the fray by suggesting there was a coven in Casey that could be linked to a nearby satanic cult.

Watts then solicited the help of the Pagan Awareness Network, which is led by another witch, bank customer service officer David Garland, who was once the Australian representative for the Witches League for Public Awareness.

According to the Herald Sun, Garland wrote to Attorney General Rob Hulls, claiming the elected officials had "vilified" witches with their comments.

The attorney general encouraged Garland to file a complaint with the Equal Opportunity Commission under the new vilification laws, which he did.

"We govern for all Victorians – and that includes witches, magicians and sorcerers," Hulls told Garland.

The paper reports the two officials now face mounting legal bills since the city of Casey will not cover their expenses.

A trial is scheduled for the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal early next year.

If it is a witch, and you call it a witch, I see absolutely no problem.

President Bush is a Methodist......wonder if I'll be sued! (Apparently, only in Canada or Australia.)

Since the State of Victoria passed their "religious vilification" law. If somebody "feels humiliated" by what's said, it doesn't matter whether it's true. Only their feelings are relevant. In addition to this witch case (I would think that being a "trans-gendered naturopath" is all the humiliation a person needs :-), there's currently at least one Christian pastor being prosecuted for telling Moslems about the actual contents of the Koran.

Sigh! My parents said we were going to hell in a handbasket. I'm glad they are not around to see that what they said is true.

This new science is fascinating to me. Tell me again how sheep's bladders may be employed to prevent earthquakes.

From Tom White's column in the November "Voice of the Martyrs":

"Muslim lawyers, in concert with the Australian court, are now bringing Christians to hearings simply for stating facts about Islam and for referring Muslims to specific references in their own Koran. Facts or the truth cannot be offered as a defense in this court. Basically, this law is written so that if the truth, including a historical document, causes someone of another religion to feel humiliated, then this offense is grounds for a hearing, trial and possible six-month imprisonment."

The specific case mentioned involves two Pakistani Christian ministers who informed some Moslems that Mohammed could not save people, and that Mohammed was not sure of his own salvation. They used Mohammed's own words from the Koran and the Hadith. Moslems were offended by the contents of their own religion; off the pastors go to trial.

"Under this law, the Victorian government can help the accusers write the accusation, in effect siding with the accusers." Won't it be fun when we have this kind of "tolerance" here? :-)

This is just over the top. The truth is the truth is the truth. Sounds like the courts have to decide for the offended. Why can't the pastors be offended that the Muslims are offended? Where will this ever end?

And great Presidents turn their great ideas into historic reality.

Good tagline, but I thought it could use a different ending.

Shalom.

Where will this ever end?

I think the law is intended to be a tool to repress whatever religious views the state finds inconvenient. The "offenses" for which you can be prosecuted will grow ever more vague, and the sentences more and more draconian. In these cases the law is being used against Christians, but it could as easily be against Jews, Moslems, or Hindus, if the government decided it's interests required suppressing those religions.

I don't understand why people in a more-or-less democratic system fall for this garbage. Conditioning in the schools, maybe? Don't debate or ignore your opponent ... declare yourself offended and use the government to stop him from speaking.

The VOM article mentions that the law also allows people to be offended about race, so if you say (accurately), "The majority of gang rapes in Australia are committed by Middle Eastern immigrants," well, jail for you, too.

That's what I was wondering.

It's not a bad thing to call your political opponent a one-legged midget, if your opponent, in fact, is a one-legged midget.
