I think the law is intended to be a tool to repress whatever religious views the state finds inconvenient. The "offenses" for which you can be prosecuted will grow ever more vague, and the sentences more and more draconian. In these cases the law is being used against Christians, but it could as easily be against Jews, Moslems, or Hindus, if the government decided it's interests required suppressing those religions.
I don't understand why people in a more-or-less democratic system fall for this garbage. Conditioning in the schools, maybe? Don't debate or ignore your opponent ... declare yourself offended and use the government to stop him from speaking.
The VOM article mentions that the law also allows people to be offended about race, so if you say (accurately), "The majority of gang rapes in Australia are committed by Middle Eastern immigrants," well, jail for you, too.
