A Kaohsiung hospital yesterday reported this winter's first SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome) case in Taiwan. Doctors at the Union Hospital said they diagnosed a resident of the southern Taiwan port city as a suspected SARS case.
The resident, whose identity was withheld, visited the hospital in the afternoon.
He showed a typical SARS symptom of a high fever, doctors said. "He suffered from a 37.5 degree fever for two days before coming to us," one doctor pointed out.
The Kaohsiung resident returned from a trip to China not long ago.
After the diagnosis, the patient was assigned to a pediatric ward, where a commotion took place.
Mothers of in-patient children complained about the treatment the hospital is giving the SARS case in isolation in the pediatric ward.

Only a matter of time, I'm afraid. It was likely that it would come back with the flu season, which also sweeps out of China every year, from all those pig and duck farms.
Well, not much we can do about it. I just got a flu shot today, coincidentally, but there's no way to protect yourself against SARS.

Mothers of in-patient children complained about the treatment the hospital is giving the SARS case in isolation in the pediatric ward. From this, then, I take it that the SARS patients are being kept in/near the pediatric ward?
Well, the young do seem least affected by SARS ...

The patient might be a child. This article doesn't give us a lot of info.

You're right. This patient might be a child. Hopefully, this hospital is a clean hospital, and the SARS patient may recover without spreading this horrendous virus.

Ping
The Kaohsiung resident returned from a trip to China not long ago.
Wonder if he ate the wild "cat" meat or the pathogen was communicated from another infected human (or present in the environment)?

The patient might be a child.I thought about that - SARS doesn't have a propensity for hitting the young, but, I don't know for certain here.

CDC announces the flu shot strains are not exactly the type of flu that has just surfaced in Texas and Colorado. Now, SARS is popping back up. It's going to be a long winter.

Thanks for the ping.
Sars and Ebola at the same time again. How very odd.

I am going to reread Precognition again tonight.
Didn't MA intermix Ebola and Sars in it?
Never understood that.

You know, this is so very thin. I mean the only doctor quoted says that he had a fever of 37.5 C for two days. There are LOTS of things that cause fever--SARS doesn't have to be the only cause.

If this is truly a suspected case of SARS, then there are other symptoms than fever. Probably respiratory distress.

"The Kaohsiung resident returned from a trip to China not long ago."
Bet the Chinese are hiding their cases again. This epidemic started last November as I recall.
Did the CDC say there was any protection from the flu shot? Is it worthwhile at this point to encourage more vaccination? Did they indicate they were reworking their flu vaccine for this year?(trying to gage how bad this flu is.)
To: I'll be your Huckleberry
There was a news blip this AM about some nurse in our country volunteering for the new ebola vaccine that is being tested.
