Today Show Baits Bremer Bashes Rush
The Today Show
Posted on 11/17/2003 4:39:09 AM PST by governsleastgovernsbest
A double-header of liberal spite on this morning's Today Show. First up was an interview by Katie Couric of Amb. Paul Bremer, U.S. civil administrator in Iraq.
Couric's questioning was a festival of second-guessing, baiting and barbs.
"More soldiers have been killed in Iraq than in the first three years of the Vietnam War." [By the way, this is surely a question of semantics. When do you date the beginning of the war - when JFK sent in a few hundred "advisors" in the early 60s or when actual fighting began in '64 or so?}
And of course Katie cited her favorite source - "some" - in noting that "some say" that the US is "cutting and running" in Iraq.
She also questioned how we could transfer power in June if there would be no elections by then. Bremer patiently explained that there would be elections.
As always, Bremer kept his cool and was the consummate professional. However, at one point, in response to one of Couric's taunts disguised as a question, Bremer addressed Katie as "Miss Couric" in a voice dripping with sarcasm that left no doubt as to how he views The Perky One.
Next was a feature on Rush's return to the air today which amounted to nothing but a one-sided hit job.
The segment led with the reporter waxing ironic over a clip in which Rush informs his listeners that they are "addicted to this show."
Next, Today dug up a 10-year old quote from Rush: "I don't buy into the disease part of drug abuse."
Mused the reporter: "Will he face a credibility problem?"
Then of course there was the mandatory rehash of the McNabb/ESPN flap. The reporter declared that as a result Limbaugh's image had been "bruised." Then citing Katie's favorite source, the reporter flatly stated that "some called [Rush's McNabb remarks] racist."
I've heard Rush's remarks on McNabb described as simply wrong, or at worst racially insensitive. But "racist"? He said that the media were pumping up McNabb and would like to see a black QB succeed. Where's the racism there?
No quotes from any Rush supporters other than a brief line from his brother David to the effect that Rush was excited about coming back. Even then, Today sought to denigrate Rush's support by choosing a somewhat over-the-top line from David [can't recall exactly but it was along the lines of "Rush is super-psyched"]
Imagine if this had been a liberal icon returning to work after rehab. He would have been lionized as a courageous hero, overcoming a challenge. Katie would have become weepy and embraced him and thanked him for the way his courage had inspired millions to seek help, blah, blah, blah.

All in all, another solid day's work for Today down at the liberal farm.

glad to know what TODAY had going. Katie "drips" sarcasm all the time, so I'm glad Bremer gave it right back to her.
I'm watching Carl Cameron on C-Span....and he's doing a great job with the rabid FOX News bashers.

I like reading these. Does anyone else write an article for FR on such a regular basis?

Thanks, PS.

Thanks for the heads up on Carl Cameron. He's one of my FNC favorites, and thanks to you I've tuned to CSPAN and am enjoying his appearance.

Thank you for your report. I predict tomorrow we will get a condescending report on Governor Schwartzenegger's inauguration, focussing on Rob Lowe and Tom Arnold.

Answer to Miss Couric: No, he will not face a credibility problem.

The best way to treat this is NOT watch. Now, one of us has to watch so thanks for bearing up under this burden. But the rest of us JUST NEED TO TURN THE CHANNEL. It will work, in the long run!

Yes, thank you for watching the disgusting, ageing Katie for us because I can't stomach her for 10 seconds. I haven't watched the Today Show in 15 years.

You mean they didn't lead with the Stephen Hayes 'Case Closed' story about Saddam's numerous connections with Al Qaeda?</sarcasm>

I saw the article on this the other day. She is talking about 1961-64 when we had 17,000 personnel max in country as opposed to Iraq where we've had well over 100K.

Why watch this Katie air-head? Waste of time. I have better things to do that watch her make really big bucks pretending to be a news commentator.

When I post reports on The Today Show, I frequently receive replies along the line of yours, questioning why I bother watching this liberal tripe.
As I invariably respond, I watch out of a combination of masochism and the belief that it's worthwhile to keep an eye on what the liberal media are up to and to report back to my fellow FReepers.

Clips from Today Show interviews occasionally pop up on other NBC/CNBC/MSNBC shows, but it's hard to predict when and where.
Unless you are in a time zone west of the Eastern Zone, you've probably lost the chance to see the interviews in their entirety.

'GOOD MORNING AMERICA' CHALLENGES 'TODAY' RATINGS CROWN; SAWYER OVER COURIC IN KEY CITIES (9/9/03) ABC's GOOD MORNING AMERICA has caught and passed NBC's TODAY show in many of the nation's top cities, new numbers from NIELSEN RESEARCH reveal.
The morning audience war is set to intensify this fall after GMA topped TODAY in the number one market, New York City, on Monday with a 4.5 rating/15 share over NBC's 3.6/12.
[GMA easily wins Chicago with 4.4/15 over TODAY's 2.6/9, and nearly doubled TODAY in Philly 8.4/25 to 4.0/12.]

Thanks for the update -- now go take a hot shower to get the ick off.
"I've heard Rush's remarks on McNabb described as simply wrong, or at worst racially insensitive. But "racist"? He said that the media were pumping up McNabb and would like to see a black QB succeed. Where's the racism there?"
I am a long-time Rush admirer, but I've got to say that this is probably the dumbest thing he ever did. Not because it smacked of racism (it wasn't), but because his observation was about 20 years misplaced. What he said about the media wanting to prop up a black quarterback certainly has taken place. But there have been a great number of "successful" black quarterbacks in the NFL these past two decades and, for the life of me, I can't see where there is a need to prop them up now. They've proven themselves quite well a long time ago. Now, the Philadelphia media may have been propping up McNabb for whatever reasons -- but that's a different discussion.
I really have to wonder if the drug use was clouding Rush's judgement on this one.
FWIW.
