WASHINGTON (AP) - The Republican-drafted federal energy bill has raised the ire of California's Democratic legislators, who contend it jeopardizes the environment, subsidizes Midwestern states and does little to prevent the type of misconduct that fueled the state's energy crisis.

"It sounds like those who poisoned our water with MTBE will get off scot-free," Boxer said in a statement.

Good God, something she and I agree on. Did hell freeze today?

Funny...the Democrats weren't alarmed at all when Davis was running things and causing this energy crisis.

It could lead to weakening of our environment in California,

It's exactly that kind of thinking that got them into so much trouble in the first place. They want more???

It was the state of CA that brought us that MTBE and their insistance that the tanks be purged between each change for cold weather and hot weather mixtures that caused shortages. CA could have adopted ethanol instead of MTBE and didn't; and we would have avoided the contamination if they had. Blame the politicians at least at the same level as the lobbiests who pushed MTBE. Never did understand how lowering mileage, but only burning a little cleaner lowered the total polution level. New cars did that and the car buying craze certainly helped.

If the Californians don't think the federal bill is tough enough, then why don't the dopes pass their own bill?

Gee, Barbara.

You mean your friends from the EPA during the Clinton administration that suppressed data showing the hazards of the additive while demanding its implementation?

I would have thought she would have supported this as it was her rat friends in Sacramento that origionaly required it to be added to our states gasoline.

LOL, it was scumbag simpletons like Boxer who wanted MTBE in gasoline to begin with, to make the gas "burn cleaner". Oil companies were compelled to start using the crap by the EPA and now when we find out that the tradeoff for "cleaner air" is "dirtier water", the scumbag lawyers want to go after those deep, deep pockets.

I agree with the provision that prevents lawsuits against the oil companies for adding MTBE to their gasoline. In the end, it would only be us consumers (as usual) who feather the nests of the scumbag lawyers.

I hated MTBE when I lived in Denver - it screwed up the oxygen sensor and caused the fuel injection system to deliver an overly rich mixture which cut my fuel milage from a normal 24 - 26 down to 17 - 19. I suspect that my car actually created more pollution when using MTBE.

"California Democrats also contend the energy bill would crack open the door to offshore drilling, in part by making it harder for the state to control activities off its shoreline"

Offshor drilling should have never been stopped.

The only reason that you can go on a beach in So. Cal. today without coming home covered with tar is the drilling and pumping that was done in the Channel Islands (off
Santa Barbara), Long Beach, and Seal Beach.

Until that was done there was a natural oil slick and tar on all the beaches from north of Santa Barbara to Mexico.

As a 5th generation So. Californian i'm for drilling for oil anywhere it exists!

Oh she finally jumped on the belated bandwagon after all the dang damage was done. (barf!) She also screamed that Lake Shasta and the upper Sacramento river were eternally poisoned after that train tipped over a few years ago.

What a total, unmitigated DING-BAT!!!

Quick, somebody do a search. Given that the Sierra Club supported MTBE Boxer absolutely HAD to have supported its use at one time and, of course, said so vociferously.

Boxer's reputation for crass stupidity continues to grow.
Her stupidity is stunning.

And what's that say for the Californians who elect and reelect her?
Whew.....

Of course not. That would mean admitting that their core policies are a failure...and we can't have that, now can we? ; )
