ITHACA--Only 15 percent of Ithaca College freshman think college officials have the right to prevent people with radical views from speaking on campus, but 65 percent said the college should prohibit racist and sexist speech on campus, according to the results of the freshman attitude survey, which were released last week.
Broken down by school, the highest percentage of students agreeing with prohibiting racist and sexist speech were in the Roy H. Park School of Communications. Sixty-eight percent agreed, a figure that surprised Policello.
This years communications responses were a bit different, she said of the survey results.
Freshman journalism major Anna Uhls said she was surprised that communications majors were in favor of a prohibition, since she believes most journalists are supportive of the freedom of speech.
She said the college administration should not interfere with radical views on campus and should only get involved if someone is going to get hurt.
However, she said, Its not an acceptable thing to have on campus, and we should try to limit it as much as possible.
Freshman television and radio major Ram Calley said he thinks the issue is complicated because students would be upset if the college tried to limit political speech, but that hate speech is different.
Im surprised that 68 percent of [communications] students agreed with prohibiting speech, but on the grounds that its hateful speech, Im not surprised, he said.

So, to recap: at Ithaca College, the students believe that radical left-wing speech should be protected and "hate speech" should be censored. Furthermore, the most liberal students are in the journalism school.
Ithaca is the City of Evil.

Freshman television and radio major Ram Calley said he thinks the issue is complicated because students would be upset if the college tried to limit political speech, but that hate speech is different. The problem with so-called "hate speech" is deciding on whose definition of "hate" would be used to determine if something was indeed "hate speech". One person's definition of "hate" could be more general whereas another person's definition of "hate" could be more exact.

So people should be free to say what they want... as long as the students approve of it first. They truly are stupid if they can't see the irony of their position.

To them, any speech that disagrees with them is "hate speech."

They truly are stupid if they can't see the irony of their position. Yeah, well, this is why we don't let 18 year olds run the country, isn't it? ;)

...65 percent said the college should prohibit racist and sexist speech on campus, according to the results of the freshman attitude survey, which were released last week. These poor kids probably thought the survey was part of their admission process--one politically-incorrect misstep and you're outta there!

Sure they do. That makes less for them to learn. No need to here about obvious contradictions and then have to thing for yourself. It's entirely understandable. After all, there's only so much time to get blind stinking drunk on daddy's dime.

Why, oh why, do the most moronic populations of this country get polled on serious issues, as if they somehow have more knowledge or wisdom than other groups? College students HAVE NOT YET begun to pay the taxes or shoulder the costs of what their ignorant ilk supports. They have all the idealism with NONE of the realism.
Let's poll the 50-something, moderately overweight, lawn-mowing, beer-drinking Americans who know a thing or two, rather than these children whose sole focus in life is sex and partying.

One person's definition of "hate" could be more general whereas another person's definition of "hate" could be more exact. Exactly. In Canada, quoting the Bible has been labeled "hate speech".

Your postings really write themselves, don't they?
Talk about your purblind stumblers - these Ithacan students might as well be trussed up blindfolded in a sack for all the good their sense is doing for them.
Future public sector 'workers', to be sure.
