ROBERT DURST is cranky. The man who wore a dress, the millionaire who stole a sandwich, a New York real-estate scion who lived in a $300-a-month Galveston flat, the husband whose first wife disappeared, the friend whose pal got shot dead, has stunned everyone - found not guilty of murder in a gruesome Texas trial where he admitted hacking up a body.

If there was ever a reason to think revamping the system of picking a jury pool, THIS IS IT.

At least he admitted it, unlike Simpson.

I am starting to wonder if Galveston is really part of texas. I get that way sometimes. Austin and Corpus Christi sometimes worry me too.

They interviewed a few jurors on TV, asking how they came to the conclusion of "Not Guilty"...
Clearly, not a brain surgeon amongst them...
Rather, they were closer to brain dead....
Jury selection has become a science - to free the guilty..
I wonder if they can try and convict the bastard for inappropriate treatment of a corpse, and contamination of the water he tossed the parts into....

what about picking policemen that don't worship the feet of murderers.......
Shaking his hand?...telling him they were rooting for him?......
I guess I just don't get it...

This guy deserves to have a deer hunting accident. And the jury should be taken into space and let out an airlock they are so stupid.

Youn know, I REALLY, REALLY believe in the jury system- but a case like this shakes my faith just a little.
I have been through the jury selection process a few times here in Alaska, and the fastest way to get thrown out of the pool of prospective jurors is to sound as though you know something about the subject of the case (not the defendant, but the forensic evidence, actual crime rates in the community, firearms if it is a weapons-related charge, etc)
The more ignorant and naive you are, the more likely to wind up on a criminal-case jury. Sad, but true.

Well, I'll take that as a complement..
I've been called to report for Jury duty at least 5 times since we came to Kalifornicate...
I was interviewed 4 times - in the 5th case the lawyer settled when he saw that the trail and witnesses were ready to go.
I was excused every time....
Of course, that decision may have been influenced by the fact that I showed up with a hangman's noose made with new rope... (just kidding)
I think you may have missed a neat series I've posted, dealing the the 3Bn/4th Marine Regiment's march into Baghdad..
I'll ping you with Part 3, and you will find links to Parts 1 and 2 contained within...
I'll add your name to the ping list for the next 2 parts..

Let's just hope that we, as a society, think about whatever changes we intend to make before going ahead and making them. I nearly had a melt down when I saw one of Bill O'Reilly's guests suggest something. My e-mail reoly to O'Reilly, below, explains:
Mr. O'Reilly,
I watched your segment in horror on November 12th as you entertained Kathleen Shaul's idea of having career jurists paid for by the state. While I agree that we have too many citizens in the jury pool that are not really competent enough to render fair verdicts, I doubt that have you have considered the consequences of creating a new class of government employee. Consider what happens to some people when they work in public service jobs - i.e. 'journalists at C-SPAN & NPR. Talk about a tainted jury with way too much power! And what would we do when they attempt to unionize?
