Adios, Boxer!
November 12, 2003 | Rick J. Radecki

Posted on 11/12/2003 3:00:46 PM PST by DesertGOP

This past Veterans Day, at a local event honoring America’s brave fighting men and women of the Armed Forces, I was also privileged to join about 300 of my “closest friends” of the High Desert Republican Party, as we together witnessed firsthand the preliminary candidacy of, quite possibly, the GOP’s best shot at beating U.S. Senator Barbara Boxer in November of next year. This apparent no-name is nothing of the sort, for any of the bills in your wallet or purse right now most likely are autographed by this past presidential appointee. She is Rosario Marin and, not unlike Arnold Schwarzenneger’s meteoric rise in Golden State politics, she is already being heartily welcomed by some of the body electorate for articulating the same popular rage of a growing people’s revolt against “business as usual” shenanigans in Sacramento and Washington, D.C.

This former Secretary of the Treasury, and highest-ranking Hispanic woman in the Bush administration, recently boasted to us that she is the odds-on favorite to unseat Sen. Boxer, especially since Mrs. Marin shares five distinct traits with California’s newest governor: Both are immigrants to America; both pronounce the state’s name correctly (“Call-lee-for-nee-ah”) both are Republicans; both are fiscally conservative and socially moderate on some issues; and, both have made lots of money—Arnold through his action-hero movies and various business ventures; candidate Marin, in applying her signature as then-treasury secretary, to the paper currency that made the Guvernator rich in the first place.

So why should the party of Abe Lincoln, Teddy Roosevelt and Ronald Reagan feel almost giddy about its prospects to boot Boxer out and replace her with a viable and former Bush-appointee Republican? Well, for starters, as her Web site, “RosarioforSenate.com” confirms, Rosario Marin, the former Treasurer of the United States, was the highest-ranking Latina (i.e., Hispanic) in the Bush Administration and the first U.S. Treasurer born outside the country.

Born in Mexico on August 4, 1958, she was fourteen years old when her parents brought her to the U.S. Not speaking a word of English, she attended California public schools, and became a U.S. Citizen in 1984. Rosario attended East LA Community College, and then later received her bachelor’s degree from California State University, Los Angeles. While attending college, and after graduation, she worked for City National Bank, working herself up the ranks. Her final position with the bank was Marketing Consultant and member of the management team.

It was her commitment to public service, though, which led Rosario to continue her education. She graduated from Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government Programs for Senior Executives in State and Local Government and she was awarded an honorary Doctor of Law degree from her alma mater, Cal State University, Los Angeles.

Appointed by President George W. Bush, Rosario was sworn in as the 41st Treasurer of the United States by Treasury Secretary Paul O’Neill on August 16, 2001. As U.S. Treasurer, Rosario’s duties included overseeing the U.S. Mint and the Bureau of Engraving and Printing. In addition she spearheaded the Treasury Department’s Financial Education Outreach, as well as the Partnership for Prosperity efforts between the United States and Mexico.

She has been on the cover of various magazines, including the Hispanic Business Magazine, where she was named one of the 100 most influential Hispanics in the nation.

In the wacky world that is American politics, where gender, race and cultural affiliation still weigh heavily in any campaign—whether Republican or Democrat—and can spell the difference between serving the folks from the inside versus looking on in envy from outside the store window, so to speak, Rosario Marin appears to have a winning combination: She’s a woman, an Hispanic, an immigrant, and possesses an impressive track record in both the private and public sectors.

Is she the bona fide “perfect package” candidate for U.S. Senator from California of which the GOP has been searching for, but has failed to find, for a decade and more? Who knows? Time will tell.

However, perhaps an early campaign slogan and bumper sticker say it best about Rosario Marin’s commitment to becoming the state’s next senatorial representative in D.C.—“Adios, Boxer.”

Whatever catch-phrase you prefer, let’s hope that voters up and down the state embrace this golden opportunity to elect a credible candidate and proven public servant who is of the people, by the people, for the people. Then, all that will remain will be to send flowers and an appropriate political eulogy to the vanquished Senator Barbara Boxer and her ilk—the same salutation we recently left for Gov. Davis at the polls—“Adios and Good-bye!”

Well, I'm probably going to catch all kinds of you-know-what from other Republicans, and especially conservatives, specifically, for posting my own commentary and copy of letter to the editor about my introduction to possible California U.S. Senate candidate, Rosario Marin, but here it goes anyway.

I appreciate any and all comments, and maybe I'm just sick and tired of the GOP losing year after year after year in the Golden State that I would seemingly compromise my conservative ideals about the sanctity of life and such, but I can always counter with the fact that we still do have a pro-life and pro-traditional marriage president in the White House (and, hopefully, for an additional four years come 2004).

Greetings from "Arnold's Country,"

I looked on her website trying to find out what her views are on illegal immigration, one of the biggest problems facing California. Nothing was mentioned. California needs a Senator who will speak up about this issue. Barbara Boxer's voting record on immigration is dismal, Feinstein's is a little better, but not much. Do you have any idea what Mrs. Marin's views are on this issue?

'Bout a woman I know
Ah, it come to lovin'
Oh, she steals the show

I'll be happy to oblige you. You are caving in to the money people because they won't support a conservative. That means what you will get is policies destructive to conservatives. What's the point of having a Party if it allows leftists to define every issue?

Bill Simon, perhaps one of the most incompetent candidates in history, only lost by 350,000 votes while being stabbed in the back by his own Party. 1.2 million Republicans sat out that election. There are no excuses. A competent conservative candidate can win. We should stop our wailing and get to work.

Best of luck to her. She sounds like the classic American success story.

What does this little code phrase mean? That she is pro-abortion? No thanks. We don't need more baby-killing RINOs in the Senate, blocking judicial appointments and voting for abortion measures, that's for sure.

Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins of Maine, both Republicans, both shamefully voted against the Partial Birth Abortion Bill, unlike many Democrats--including Tom Daschle--who voted for it. We sure don't need any more of them in the Senate, especially from a State like California which has often voted for genuine conservatives, most notably Ronald Reagan.

She's not "Secretary of the Treasury" but "Treasurer of the United States" and her name is still on the new multicolored $20 bills (Series 2004) which have John W. Snow (rather than Paul O'Neill) as Secretary of the Treasury.

I don't know that it is true that she has resigned--Radecki evidently thinks so, but her name on the Series 2004 bills suggests that she is still in office.

I do not think Rosario is the GOP's best hope to unseat Boxer.
