self

Posted on 11/12/2003 9:49:33 AM PST by hsmomx3

Anyone hear about this?

"The Universal National Service Act of 2003 "amends the Military Selective Service Act to authorize the military registration of females" and declares "that it is the obligation of every U.S. citizen, and every other person residing in the United States, between the ages of 18 and 26 to perform a two-year period of national service"

You *really* need to learn some history, not to mention perspective.

We have the right to defend ourselves. We delegate that as a power to the government. That's the extent of it, and it doesn't include making a slave of others.

We also delegate the power to raise armed forces. Implicit in and inseparable from that power is the conscription of manpower to staff those armies, when needed for the common defense. You may believe conscription is slavery but that doesn't make it so.

You cannot convince me that it is, I probably cannot convince you that it isn't. Nevertheless, the Supreme Court has repeatedly ruled that it isn't.

Freedom is a state of mind.

Janis Joplin also sang that "Freedom's just another word for nothing left to lose..." Although that line was actually written by Kris Kristofferson.

You can make all the rationalizations you wish, but they don't make it true.

But this country needs people "indoctrinated" in constitutional knowledge and self-defense.

And the rightful place for that instruction is the 13-plus years of government schooling that our tax dollars currently and relentlessly pay for.

"Compulsary, public service indoctrination" is simply the other end of "Mandatory, tax-funded pre-school."

Cradle-to-grave, thumb-sucking nanny government.

Slavery involves actual, literal *ownership* of another human -- and while the military can be quite controlling, only the lunatic fringe would truly believe that they actually *own* people as chattel.

The whole point of socialism it owning you, me and the rest as cattle from craddle to grave.

I truly don't even know where to begin with someone who equates conscription with actual slavery.

And why start being polite *now*?

Right, but what on earth does that have to do with being conscripted?

comparing military service to slavery is warped

The bill in question goes beyond just military service, it includes anything deemed "national service". There is no definition of what this service entails, and no room for disagreement over whether such service is worthy of being compulsary.

You have lambasted several people here who have made it clear that they would certainly serve in certain causes if asked to; their objection stems from criticizing them for not serving causes which they do not consider worthy. Simply labelling a cause "national defense" is not enough to justify compulsary service; if they honestly believe it is not worthy (a resonable question when asked to risk death defending some faraway place few can comprehend the relevance of), what right does anyone (you, congresscritters, etc.) have in saying "tough, I don't care what you think, serve or be jailed"? ...especially when the motivations of certain leaders is questionable?

I will serve the defense of this country if asked. If forced to do so without choice ("serve or be jailed" is duress, not choice), I am immediately suspicious of the motivations of those declaring the cause compulsary.

I know.

K-12 mandatory government school.

2 years "compulsory service" (Slavery)

Half of the remaining of your life working to pay taxes.

And they call this freedom. Sheesh.

That's because they remind me of every leftist who bitches about military action that any Republican president orders, and is all gaga over Clintigula's military missions (expanding the Somalia mission, Bosnia, Kosovo, etc.). They want to pick and choose whether or not they'll deign to serve their country.

Ever heard the term lambs to the slaughter.

To be serious, the whole point on socialism it to enslave everyone to the political elites and from there, have every aspect of our lives controlled, no free will allowed, and this has happened many times through out history.

My belief is, if you seek to enslave me, I have no problem seeking to enslave you first. Self-preservation is the ultimate justification.
