From 680 AM, WPTF
(Greenville-AP) -- Meg Scott Phipps pleaded guilty in a federal courtroom in Greenville to five charges stemming from the scandal in her campaign. Phipps pleaded guilty to two counts of extortion, two counts of mail fraud and one count of conspiracy. While Phipps faces a maximum penalty of 45 years in prison, there was no immediate indictation of what her sentence will be. Sentencing for Phipps is tentatively scheduled for March first. A jury on October 30th found Phipps guilty of four of five state charges. The perjury and other charges were the result of testimony Phipps and former aides gave to the state Board of Elections in June 2002. Prosecutors said Phipps lied during the hearing, encouraged aide Linda Saunders to lie and turned over altered campaign finance checks to election officials. Witnesses testified that Phipps lied to cover up unreported cash campaign contributions from carnival vendors interested in winning contracts to do business at the State Fair.

I dunno, OT.
She looks like she may be full of gristle to me.
To: Phantom Lord
Do you believe that she will get "real" jailtime for these crimes? I am afraid that she will get some cushy deal like probabtion and maybe a short time under house arrest or in a minimum security prison.
45 years sounds about right to me...

I'm afraid she will get probation or a light sentence.
I seem to recall that she's got a clean record except for this.
To: martin_fierro
Naturally!
To: dei23
yes, she is going to get some real time.

Jail time? Are you kidding?!?!? I would be very surprised if she did. Is she deserving of massive amounts of jail time? Yes.
These are not petty shoplifting charges.

Is this the same state that wants to tax everybody for driving through on a Federal highway?

Sentencing was tentatively set for March 1 for Phipps, who faced a maximum of 45 years in prison. But U.S. Attorney Frank Whitney said he anticipated an active prison sentence of five years.
